Arts and Sciences
The Lazzara Grand Theater located in the new $22 million, 120,000-square-foot
Fine Arts Center had its grand opening celebration on Jan. 23, 2003.
The Freshmen Interest Group Program has been experiencing great success
since its inception. Designed to help ease the transition for first-year
students to university life, the program involves a learning community
where freshmen are involved in a cluster of classes, some of which may
be taught inside their residence hall.
The June 2002 issue of Downbeat magazine (the premiere professional
jazz journal) announced that the UNF jazz program has produced six ensemble
and individual award recipients in the magazine's 25th Annual Student
Awards.
Business Administration
In honor of a $5 million gift by Blanche and Luther Coggin that will
be matched by $5 million from state funds, the college was named the
Coggin College of Business.
The College's international business program has developed into one
of the most active in the nation, with 13 student and faculty exchange
relationships with business schools in Western and Eastern Europe, South
America and China.
The new $500,000 Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) was launched
this fall, with 12 students directing the fund as a part of a 6-credit
hour course.
The Logistics faculty hosted the 2002 Logistics and Supply Chain Seminar
series, which were attended by senior logistics professionals from around
the world. Speakers included internationally recognized logistics and
supply chain experts from Fortune 500 companies and other leading logistics
academic programs worldwide.
Computing Sciences
and Engineering
A COCSE student was named UNF's first Goldwater Scholar.
A COCSE student was the recipient of UNF's first NSF Graduate Research
Fellowship, Honorable Mention.
The College's new civil engineering BS program graduated its first students
in August 2002.
The College's bachelor's programs in computer science and electrical
engineering received accreditation renewals by ABET, the recognized
agency for accreditation of USA university programs in engineering,
technology, and applied science education.
The College exceeded $1 million is sponsored research funding for the
first time.
College of Education
and Human Services
The College is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation
of Teacher Education, one of only 12 teacher education programs in Florida
to hold this distinction.
The College has continued its commitment to urban education and has
launched†its fourth urban professional development school, focused
on ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) teacher preparation.
In 2002, three out of the five First Coast counties selected UNF graduates
as Teacher of the Year.
Twenty-five percent of Duval County's new teachers are hired each year
from UNF, the largest percentage of any public or private college of
education.
Over 80 percent of the College's graduates stay and teach in the First
Coast.
College of Health
Graduates in all areas continue to score significantly above the national
average on their licensing/certification exams.
The 2002-2003 president of the American Academy of Health Behavior is
a professor in the College of Health.
The 2002-2003 chair of the Florida Board of Nursing is the dean of the
College of Health.
The STARS (Start Taking Alcohol Risks Seriously) program received the
Federal Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Program Award and was recognized
by the U.S. government as effective in preventing and reducing drug
and alcohol abuse.
