Q & A with Fen Yu, Interim Director of Institutional Research with regard to data related to student retention. A few of the major topics discussed are outlined below.

    • Yield Rate:  Enrollment Services is trying to increase the yield rate for FTIC, but we have to balance the freshman profile. The idea is that the better students you accept, the more likely they are to graduate.  UNF has significantly increased the profile, but it will only lead to greater retention if students choose us as a destination school.
    • Retention Rate:  There are 2 prominent groups of students who leave the university.
First group with a high profile but not high enough for other, more prominent, state schools, so they start at UNF, get their AA, then transfer to UF, FSU or USF.
Second group is those who struggle, don’t get accepted at UNF for fall, stay for a while and then transfer to FSCJ because UNF was too tough.
    • Surveys related to retention: Recent study for all undergraduates attempting to judge whether or not students leave or struggle based on financial hardships. Will be completed soon. Wonderful data on graduating seniors, but it is a long survey and has low response rate.
    • Concern about FSCJ transfers:  Many professors are concerned about the high freshman profile leading to enrolling more transfers who are not properly prepared to enter UNF. The lowest GPA we will accept is 2.0; basically just above suspended.
    • Concern about FTE: Our FTE is going down, and we are at risk of missing state funded targets.
    • OIRA Website:  The Office of Institutional Research has a wealth of information and data in the Interactive Queries section.
  • Other Discussions/Announcement
We are scheduled to meet with President Delaney in December.
  • Adjournment & Next Meeting
The meeting adjourned at 1:20 PM.

The next meeting was expected to be on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, but it is decided to meet the President in the President’s Office Conference Room on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 12:15 p.m.
