The committee discussed the issues surrounding adjunct pay rates and identified areas to investigate. There are two groups of adjuncts: teaching for pleasure and teaching for a living. The committee’s goal is to seek pay increases for adjuncts to allow a higher quality of life for those teaching for a living. Marianne Jaffee will run data reports to highlight information such as adjunct length of employment, salary, and pay comparisons with peer institutions.
Additional discussion followed to brainstorm options for adjuncts to save money and to address the lack of travel funds for adjunct faculty. The committee will investigate the feasibility of establishing a competitive pool for research and travel funding. Ideas such as parking permit discounts, tuition reimbursement, online orientations, and mentorship were discussed.
Marianne Jaffee suggested that the committee invite Jay Coleman to continue the discussion.
