Cheryl Gonzalez and Marc Snow were asked to explain a recent EOD/DRC testing incident and the findings of Cheryl’s investigation into the incident. Cheryl explained her findings as being as being specific to the incident investigated and that it was not a challenge to faculty academic freedom nor was it establishing any particular policy for testing. Cheryl did clarify the situation and further explained that exams given in the DRC should be of the same format as those given in the classroom setting. Faculty members asked Cheryl several questions regarding the issue with the result being that the committee was satisfied with Cheryl’s findings and her resolution of the this issue. Cheryl also invited the committee members to contact her anytime that they had questions and expounded her desire that the office of EOD be viewed as a faculty resource.

Rusty Dubberly, director of DRC, and Mauricio Gonzalez, Vice President of Student Affairs, met with the committee to explain DRC operations. Questions were asked about the exam monitoring processes, exam security, and hours of operations. The DRC has become problematic in the minds of many faculty members and the committee was asking for assurances that academic standards were being maintained. The committee was provided these assurances by both Rusty and Dr. Gonzalez. Dr. Gonzales assured the faculty that the DRC would be open to meet their exam needs during the scheduled final exam periods. Rusty provided further assurance that a staff person would always be on-site to oversee the student workers in the DRC and that although student employees currently do not have access (and if they do have access, this access should be eliminated) to exams and that the controls would be reviewed and improved if and where necessary. Although some committee member remained skeptical of the DRC controls, the committee was satisfied that it had made its concerns known and that both Rusty and Mauricio were committed to improving the DRC operations where needed.

The Academic Standards committee would like to thank all of our guests attending this meeting.
