Summary of the Changes:

Program changes are requested for fall 2016 if APC can be processed in time (preferred effective term is not available for fall 2016 in the pull down menu). If not, the program of study changes are requested for fall 2017. Course changes are requested as indicated in the course change request, some are for spring 2017 and some are for fall 2017. There is no change in the total number of credit hours required.
The below changes to the ME program updates the course descriptions to several courses to better reflect what needs to be taught in the courses. Additionally, one course, Project Engineering EML3553, is moved from a required course to a technical elective and the credit hours for Senior Design I and II increase to better reflect the course content of those courses.
• EML3100 Thermodynamics I – course change
o Change MAP2302 to co-req from pre-req
• EML3101: Thermodynamics II - course change
o Remove: Co-requisite: EML 4101L
o New Course Description: This course is a continuation of EML3100, Thermodynamics I. In this course, students will consider concepts associated with power and refrigeration systems, gas mixtures, chemical reactions and equilibrium, and irreversibility and availability. Students will learn how to apply thermal sciences concepts through design project(s).
• EML4304L: Fluid Mechanics Lab - course change
o New Course Description: This laboratory course is designed to provide insight and experience into the fundamental principles taught in core thermal science lecture courses. These principles include internal and external viscous flow. These principles will also be studied using computer based simulation. Course Fees: $40
• EML4140 Heat transfer – course change
o Make co-requisite with EML 4004L Energy Systems Lab
• EML4004L – Energy Systems Lab
o Pre-requisite: EML 3101
o Make co-requisite with EML4140
• EML3553 Project Engineering - program of study change
o Remove from required courses
o Add to list of approved technical electives
• EML4551 Senior Design I - program of study change and course change
o Change to 3 credit hours
o Remove EML3553 as course pre-req
o New Course Description: This course is the first part of a two-semester team design project. Teams are responsible for preparing a project proposal including a problem statement and need identification, concept generation and down selection and a project design. Teams are further required to develop and demonstrate a proof of concept or prototype. Project management concepts such as project scheduling, budgets and economic analysis will be emphasized in the course. Additional topics covered include risk assessment, time value of money, cost benefit analysis, ethics, safety, and intellectual property such as copyrights, trademarks and patents. A final project proposal and oral presentation is required. Course Fees: $40

Prerequisite: CHM 2045: General Chemistry I ("C+" or better), PHY 2042: Physics for Engineers II ("C+" or better), PHY 2049L: Calculus-Based Physics II Lab ("C+" or better).
Corequisite: MAP 2302: Ordinary Differential Equations.
This course will include the study of energy, its forms and transformations. Topics covered will include properties of pure substances, work and heat, the first law of thermodynamics, the second law of thermodynamics, and energy and power systems using thermodynamics principles.

Description: In this course concepts are presented and studied describing the processes of transferring energy in the form of heat from one body (solid, liquid, or gas) to another body. Heat transfer by conduction and radiation will be covered, and analysis tools will be employed in the topics presented.
