Bachelor of Science in Health - Health Science Major Public Health Concentration

Summary of the Changes:
The name of the Bachelor of Science in Health’s Community Health Concentration was recently changed to the Public Health Concentration. In an effort to align the course names and changes in course descriptions with the concentration, we are requesting to change 7 course titles and course descriptions for 6 of the 7 courses. There are no changes to course prerequisites or co-requisites. The changes include:

1. HSC 2100 Personal and Community Health (3 Credits) changed to HSC2100 Personal and Public Health (3 credits)
2. HSC 3032 Foundations of Community Health (3 credits) changed to HSC3032 Foundations of Public Health (3 credits). The course description will also change.
3. HSC 3304 Instructional Methods in Health Education (3 Credits) changed to HSC 3304 Public Health Educational Strategies (3 Credits). The course description will also change.
4. HSC 4102 Fitness and Health (3 Credits) changed to HSC 4102 Physical Activity and Public Health (3 Credits). The course description will also change.
5. HSC 4730 Research in Community Health (3 Credits) changed to Public Health Research (3 credits). The course description will also change.
6. HSC 4800 Pre-Internship in Community Health (3 Credits) changed to HSC4800 Professional Preparation in Public Health (3 credits). The course description will also change.
7. HSC 4814 Community Health Internship (1-9 Credits) change to HSC4814 Public Health Practical Experience (3 credits). The course description will also change.

New Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to introduce the public health field and profession and to provide a foundation for subsequent major courses. Emphasis will be placed on the social and behavioral core of public health. Students will learn foundations of the field centered around the Responsibilities and Competencies of Health Educators. Student development and professionalism is emphasized. Prerequisite: PSY 2012 and MAC 1105 and STA 2014 or STA 2023 and CHM 2045 and CHM 2045L and MCB 2010C and BSC 2085C and BSC 2086C. Co-requisite: HSC 2100

New Course Description:

This course focuses on methods to effectively communicate health education messages and positively influence the behaviors of individuals and communities. Students will learn essential skills to communicate health messages to diverse audiences through presentations, teaching strategies, and print and social media. Prerequisites: HSC 3032, HSC 3713

New Course Description:

This course will explore the intersection of physical activity and public health. More specifically, students will learn about: 1) the relationship between physical activity and diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mental health; 2) common fitness assessments that can be used in various healthcare settings; and 3) strategies for effective physical activity promotion.

The purpose of this course is to deepen students’ understanding of the fundamental concepts and processes of public health research. Particular attention will be paid to raising learners’ ability to develop research questions and write a literature review. Prerequisites: STA 2014 or STA 2023

This will better align the course title and description with the title of the concentration, Public Health.

New Course Description:

This interactive course prepares students for the professional field of public health and health behavior. Students will review the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) responsibilities, discuss professional development skills and ethical obligations specific to public health, and secure an internship for practice experience. This course should be completed the semester prior to HSC 4814 Public Health Practical Experience.

This request is to change the name of HSC 4814 Community Health Internship (3 credits) to HSC 4814 Public Health Practical Experience (3 credits) and to change the course description. This will better align the course title and description with the title of the concentration, Public Health.

New Course Description:

The public health practical experience is a mentored field experience in a public health setting. The practical experience is meant to be a culminating experience allowing students the opportunity to practice under the guidance of an experienced public health professional. This course must be completed during the last academic semester of enrollment. Prerequisite: Completion of all required program courses.
