Directed Ind Study in Biology

BSC

Senior (4xxx)

905

This request is to add a zero credit option to the variable credit course BSC4905 Directed Independent Study in Biology. By creating a 0-credit option (in addition to 1-3 credits currently available), students who have fulfilled the allowable credit hours that count towards their major can continue to have formal transcript recognition of their continuing lab research without incurring the Excess Hour Surcharge. This will also allow for more effective tracking of students participating in DIS research within our department. This change will not affect any of the Programs of Study associated with the Biology major.
New Course Description:

Permission of instructor. Students will participate in a research investigation under the supervision of an instructor. One credit hour will require a minimum of 4 hours of research activity per week, although specific time requirements will vary with the instructor. This course may be repeated for a total of 9 credits.

Economics – Undergraduate

Change a degree-major of an existing program
Bachelor of Arts – Economics Major

Summary of the Changes:
There are two changes. First, remove all references to ECO 3632. This course does not appear in the catalog and no member of the department recognizes the designation or teaches the course. Second, the only Geography course that may be counted toward the major in Economics is GEO 3502 Economic Geography. Students in this course apply economics principles and methods to geographic study, making it suitable as an upper-division economics elective. Other courses with the GEO prefix do not meet this criteria. The total number of credit hours (30) for this major is not being changed.

Economics – Undergraduate

Change an existing minor
Economics Minor

Summary of the Changes:
There are three changes. First, students will select 1 elective at the 3000/4000 level to complete the minor. This will reduce the total number of required credits from 21 to 18 for the Economics minor, which is identical to the minor offered to students in the CCB. Second, all references to ECO 3632 are removed. This course does not appear in the catalog and no one in the department recognizes the designation or teaches the course. Third, courses with a GEO prefix (Geography) will not count toward the minor in Economics. There are now sufficient ECO/ECP/ECS electives available to make this unnecessary.

Physics – Undergraduate

Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program
Bachelor of Science – Physics Major

Summary of the Changes:
UNF Physics department requests the following curriculum changes:
1. Assign 4000 numbers for the senior-level courses and 3000 numbers for the junior-level courses. This change affects four courses:
Classical Mechanics PHY 3220
Quantum Mechanics PHY 4604
Electricity and Magnetism PHY 3320
Solid State Physics PHZ 3404
2. Make Quantum Mechanics a major requirement for all concentrations including Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Corresponding adjustments are made to the major requirement credits and the elective credits.
3. Make Solid State Physics a requirement for the Materials Science concentration. Corresponding adjustments are made to the major requirement credits and the elective credits.
4. Change the current title of PHY 1024 “Intro to Physics for New Majors” to the new title “Exploring Majoring in Physics”.
5. Change the catalog description of Modern Physics Lab to reflect correct number of hours the class meets during a week.

Electricity and Magnetism

PHY

Junior (3xxx)

320

Change the course number from PHY 3320 to PHY4320 to reflect its senior level.
Replace old prerequisites PHY 2049 Calculus Based Physics II and MAC 2313 Calculus III with a new one PHZ 3113 Mathematical Physics.
Note that assigning Math Physics as a prerequisite replaces older course prerequisites.
New Course Description:
Prerequisite: PHZ 3113 Mathematical Physics.
Description: This course is a study of electromagnetic phenomena; electrostatic potentials from Laplace's and Poisson's equations; effects of dielectric and magnetic materials; magnetic fields and potentials; induced emf; Maxwell's equations; electromagnetic radiation and waves; and computational methods applied to electricity and magnetism. This course will be four hours of lecture.
Availability: This course is normally offered Fall term only.

Quantum Mechanics

PHY

Senior (4xxx)

604

Change the course number from PHY4604 to PHY3604 to reflect its junior level.
Replace the old prerequisites MAC 2313 Calculus III, MAP 2302 Ordinary Differential Equations with PHZ 3113 Mathematical Physics.
Note that MAC 2313 and MAP 2302 are the pre- and co-requisites for the PHZ 3113 Mathematical Physics. Assigning Math Physics as a prerequisite replaces these older prerequisites.
New Course Description:

Prerequisite: PHY3101 Modern Physics, PHZ3113 Mathematical Physics.
Description: This course is a single semester introduction to the theory of quantum mechanics, including its postulates, operators and eigenvalues, exactly soluble potentials, scattering, angular momentum, atomic structure, and other applications. This course will be four hours of lecture.
Availability: This course is normally offered Spring term only.

Intro Phys for New Majors

PHY

Freshman (1xxx)

024

Change the title of PHY 1024 Intro to Physics for New Majors course to the new title Exploring Majoring in Physics. The reason for this proposed change is students confuse PHY 1024 Intro to Physics for New Majors and PHY 1020 Intro to Physics.
New Course Description:

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work – Undergraduate

Change an existing minor
Anthropology Minor

Summary of the Changes:
Anthropology faculty wish to revise the requirements for the Anthropology Minor by eliminating the restriction on Foreign Culture designated (FC) courses. We also wish to allow students to apply three 2000-level credit hours toward the Minor. We think that this will make the Anthropology Minor simpler to complete and thus more attractive to students.
