Honors Program – Undergraduate

Add a new minor - Interdisciplinary Honors Minor

Summary of the Changes:
With the proposed change of UNF’s Honors Program to an Honors College we need to adapt our curriculum to be more robust. In order to be more consistent with the guidelines of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NHCHonors.org) which state, “The curriculum of the honors college constitutes at least 20% of a student’s degree program. The honors college requires an honors thesis or honors capstone project.” Honors would also like to make completion of Honors requirements a minor. The current proposal has been developed to take advantage of the new General Education categories, implement robust Program Learning Outcomes that provide linkages within the curriculum, and lead to both increased student engagement in Honors as well as increased rates of graduation for matriculated students obtaining University Honors. In addition, the Honors program intends to increase linkages with academic departments by encouraging students to complete Honors in the Major as part of their degree programs.
IDH 1923, Honors First Year Colloquium continues to provide a robust foundation for Honors; however, the additional coursework lacks coherence. For this reason, Honors is proposing 3-credit Honors courses be completed in each of the five following categories. This will include all Honors students taking an Honors section of ENC 1143 during the spring of their first year at UNF. In addition, students must complete nine additional hours of Honors coursework through Honors specific classes, internships, or research projects with faculty. Finally, in order to support the rationale of the capstone for providing cohesiveness for the program a one credit Pass/Fail Capstone course for is being proposed separately. The Honors Program intends to use previously approved General Education courses adapted for Honors where possible. When an existing course does not exist, IDH 2934 will be used until an appropriate disciplinary course number is created or a permanent IDH course is created for interdisciplinary courses. Honors will continue to seek General Education Council for specific new courses as appropriate. The total credits for the minor is 28.

Honors Capstone Seminar (1 cr)

IDH

Senior (4xxx)

XXX

Prerequisites:
"IDH1923: Honors First Year Colloquium"
AND "IDH: Honors Pre-Capstone Seminar"
Co-requisites:
None

Course Description:

The Honors Capstone should provide students with the occasion to think holistically about their university education, their Honors experience, the goals of Honors, and their future ambitions. The Honors Capstone will typically be a credit-bearing activity pursued in the context of advanced coursework, or an internship, or a research project, or perhaps study abroad, in conjunction with a student’s major. For that reason, every capstone project requires a discipline-based mentor who must attest to the appropriateness of the learning outcomes of the proposed project and to the satisfactory attainment of those outcomes (in the post-capstone report phase). In addition, each Honors student will work with one of three Honors mentors who will review the anticipated relevance of the proposed project to the goals of Honors and the actual resonance between the completed project and the goals of Honors. Prerequisites: Current Honors student; IDH1923; Honors Pre-Capstone Seminar
