Photography Minor

Summary of the Changes:
The Art and Design Faculty wish to change the Minor in Photography requirements from 15 credits to 18 credits.
The change will bring the minor credit requirements in accord with other art minors offered in the program. We also feel that photography minors would be better prepared with an additional applied course in Photography.
Requested changes for the Minor in Photography POS:
1. Minor Credit Hours: Change from 15 Credits to 18 Credits.
2. "A minimum of 9 semester hours of upper level courses is required for the photography minor." Change to 12
3. "Select 1 PGY 3000-4000 level course." Change to "Select 2 PGY 3000-4000 level courses."

Summary of the Changes:
We wish to make the following changes to the Photography POS. The changes will clarify course titles, prerequisites and selected course descriptions.
-Change Major requirement wording in POS.
-Change course title of PGY 2401C Photography in Black and White to PGY 2401C Introduction to Photography. Change course description.
-Change course title of PGY 3820C Digital Imaging Photo Majors to PGY 3820C Introduction to Digital Imaging.
- Add PGY 3820C Introduction to Digital Imaging as a prerequisite to PGY 3276 Professional Practices.
-Change course description of PGY 3276C Professional Practices.
-Change course description to PGY 3401 Intermediate Photography.
- Change course number for PGY 3153 Color Photography to a number higher than PGY 3820 which is a prerequisite for this class. Change course description of this class.
-Delete PGY 3513C Color Photography as a prerequisite for PGY 4205 Studio Fundamentals. (PGY 3513 is a catalog misprint and not a course in our curriculum)
-Delete PGY 3410 Intermediate Photography as a prerequisite for PGY 3153 Color Photography.
-Add PGY 4205 Studio Fundamentals as a prerequisite to PGY 4218 Advanced Studio Practice. Change course description.
(PGY 4205 is listed in the current POS as Advanced Lighting Principles. The course title was changed to Studio Fundamentals and approved by the APC committee in March of 2015.)
-Change course restrictions for PGY 4476C Photography Portfolio to include: Photography Concentration majors may not have more than 15 hours (including PGY 4476C Photography Portfolio) remaining to complete degree, or be concurrently registered for more than one PGY 3000 or PGY 4000 level course.

This is the first applied course in our curriculum and the new title and description more appropriately identifies the course.
New Course Description:

Prerequisite: Completion of 30 undergraduate hours.
This course introduces students to the technical aspects of traditional black & white photography including: camera operation, film exposure and processing, darkroom printing, and professional presentation of photographic works. The course will also introduce students with basic awareness of photography history, and an understanding of photography’s communicative and expressive potentials. (A lab fee of $75 will be assessed)

We are requesting PGY 3153 Color Photography be changed to PGY 3850 Color Photography. We also wish to update the course description for Color Photography. We also wish to delete PGY 3410C Intermediate Photography as a prerequisite as the faculty believes students do not need Intermediate Photography in order to successfully complete Color Photography.

This course will investigate color photography as a means of expression and form of communication as well as introduce the principles of color theory and color characteristics of natural and artificial light. This course will investigate computer tools that manipulate and enhance photographic images. Students will explore a wide range of assignments and exercises designed to develop digital darkroom skills and expand their creative possibilities. Basic issues surrounding photography in the digital age will be presented and discussed throughout the semester. (A material fee of $75 will be assessed)

The junior level course content and objectives are not specific to photography majors, but can be of value to any major concentration in art. The class is focused upon professional practices such as: preparing resumes, artist statements, developing a professional website, and developing strategies for professional and personal pursuits after graduation.
New Course Description:

Prerequisites: PGY 3820C Introduction to Digital Imaging, or permission of instructor for non-photo BFA majors.
An introduction to practical and professional strategies related to creative practice including: documenting, editing, and archiving work, preparing resumes, project statements, developing a professional website, searching for exhibitions and other opportunities for BFA majors. This course will also introduce students to critical examination, writing and speaking about their work. (Required course for BFA Photo Majors)

New Course Description:

Prerequisite: PGY 2401C Introduction to Photography
This is an intermediate-level film and camera-based course. Goals of the class include: fine tuning technical skills, archival processing of fiber papers, fundamentals of studio lighting and further development of a photographic vision, along with the skills necessary for discussing and writing about your work and that of others. A 35mm or medium format single lens reflex (SLR) film camera with manual adjustments and a built-in or hand-held light meter is required for this course. (A material fee of $75 will be assessed.)

PGY 2401C is currently listed as Photography in Black and White. We are requesting a name change in this APC package to PGY 2401C Introduction to Photography.
We are also requesting that PGY 3153 Color Photography be given a higher number (PGY 3850) in this package. It should also be noted that there is a misprint in the UNF catalog. Color Photography is listed as

Students will pursue a semester-long project and produce a cohesive portfolio, write a self-reflective essay on their work, deliver an oral presentation to the faculty, participate in an exhibition, and update resume, artist statements, and websites developed in PGY 3276C Professional Practices or other ART courses. Additionally, students will be introduced to professional strategies including: applying to graduate school, searching for exhibitions and grants, starting a business, and preparing for job interviews. Technical skills introduced in lower level courses are further developed in this revolving set of courses that introduce students to a range of photographic approaches including: documentary practice, digital fabrication and manipulation, advanced portraiture, alternative analog and digital processes, etc. Students will explore the challenges of self-generated assignments, longer-term projects, and on-demand web publishing of work. Particular emphasis is placed on self-critique and analysis of photographic work from formal, technical, and conceptual perspectives. Photo majors may repeat this course for up to 12 credits under different content. (A material fee of $75 will be assessed)

Course Description:

Emphasis is upon digital camera controls, computer editing tools for manipulating and enhancing images, digital output, and developing essential strategies for taking photographs. Students will produce a portfolio and research paper. One third (1 credit) of this class is devoted to lectures and 2/3 (2 credits) is devoted to lab. (A $75 materials fee will be assessed.)

Course Description:

An introductory course designed for non-photo majors or minors who want to develop a working understanding of the fundamentals of digital photography. The course emphasizes camera controls, basic photographic techniques, and the practice of photographic seeing within the context of a study abroad experiences in Italy. Students are encouraged to explore the rich history and culture of Italy through various photographic assignments. One third (1 credit) of this class is devoted to lectures and 2/3 (2 credits) is devoted to lab.
(Photography majors and minors participating in the Italy Study Abroad program should register for PGY 4944 Photography Practicum. Other non-photo BFA majors should contact the department of Art and Design for registration information.

We propose to create and add two major electives--SOW 4XXX Child Abuse and Neglect (3 credits) and SOW 4XXX Child Welfare Practice (3 credits)--to the the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program of Study. We are required to offer these courses as a part of our participation in the statewide Title IV-E Child Welfare Educational and Stipend Program sponsored by the Florida Department of Children and Families. These courses will be serve other BSW students as well. Course objectives and descriptions are consistent with parallel courses offered as part of the stipend program in other Florida Social Work Programs. The addition of these courses will not impact the total credit hours for this program of study; the total number of credit hours remains 60.

Course Description: 

This course provides students with knowledge and skills related to the theory, research, and implications of child and adolescent maltreatment for child development and well-being. Course content is presented within the context of child welfare practice and social work with children and adolescents in public agencies and programs. Issues related to children, families, and communities are covered and attention is given to working with ethnic minorities, women, gays and lesbians, and persons with disabilities. Particular attention will be given to federal and state child welfare statutes including Chapter 39, Florida statutes including the Adoption and Safe Families Act and the range of services provided by the Department of Children and Families and other agencies.

Course Description: 

This course provides a framework of values, knowledge and skills necessary to practice with vulnerable children and their families. The major focus is on social work in public child welfare in the State of Florida. The course utilizes an ecosystem perspective for understanding and assessing the special needs of at-risk children and families. Specific attention is on assessing families and children using the State of Florida’s Safety Decision Making Method and other family assessment instruments.
