Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program
Bachelor of Science – Computing &Info Sciences Major Information Technology Concentration

Summary of the Changes:

The School of Computing assesses student outcomes from our program every year. As part of this ongoing continual improvement process, we are proposing changes to the Information Technology concentration.
The faculty propose the following changes to the Information Technology Concentration:
Prerequisites:
- Replace COP2551 Introduction to OOP with COP2220 Computer Science I
- Update occurrences of the words "semester hours" with "credits."
    Major Requirements
- Remove CGS4308 Information Processing: Requirements Identification and Specifications
- Add COP3503 Computer Science II

- Add COP4640 Operating Systems Environments and Administration
- Add COP4813 Internet Programming
- Add CDA4010 Human Factors and Collaborative Computing
- Add CIS4364 Information Systems Intrusion Detection
- Add CNT4406 Network Security and Management
- Add CNT4514C Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing
- Remove outdated program text
    Concentrations:
- Remove this entire area, freeing the 12-15 credits (depending on concentration) used by the above added     classes
- Certain classes from this area were moved to the Major Requirements
    Major Electives:
- Reduce credits from 12 to 6
- Rewording of program text
    Upper-Level Electives:
- Rewording of program text
    Free Electives:

After a review of our program as part of on-going improvement, we have determined that this course should be phased out to make room for more pertinent courses that will provide students skills required in IT.
We wish to terminate CGS4308 Information Processing: Requirements Identification and Specifications.

Students currently take this course with no programming and data structures background and hence are grossly unprepared for the material covered in this class. The faculty voted to make COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP the pre-requisite so that students are more prepared for this class.
We wish to make COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP a pre-req to CGS4307 Information Processing: Organizational Perspective.
New Course Description:

Prerequisites: COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP or equivalent. Students in this course will examine the organizational requirements of information processing in support of administrative decision processes. This involves the examination and use of information processing models in business to transform organizational memory into appropriate designs. Projects involving the use of information models applied to various application domains are required including the design of relational data models and their implementation using a relational database management system.

Based on accreditation guidelines and so that students are better prepared for the material covered in this class, faculty have voted to make a database course a co-requisite for this course. It is anticipated that this will also assist with scheduling concerns of students, while complying with the continuous improvement process designed to meet accreditation expectations from ABET.
We wish to make COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP or COP3530 Data Structures a pre-req to this course. Additionally, we wish to make CGS4307 Information Processing: Organizational Perspective, COP4710 Data Modeling, or COP4720 Database Systems a co-req to this course.

New Course Description:

Prerequisite: COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP or COP3530 Data Structures
Co-requisite: COP4720 Database Systems or COP4710 Data Modeling or CGS4307 Information Processing: Organizational Perspective
Description: In this course, students will use current technologies to develop Internet and web-based applications. The topics to be covered include client and server-side components for the WWW to facilitate client-server communication, web services, and an introduction to Internet security. Students will extend course topics via programming assignments, library assignments and other assigned activities.

The faculty met and agreed to make COP3503 a pre-requisite course instead of data structures in order to facilitate scheduling issues. We wish to change the pre-req from COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP to COP3503 Computer Science II.

New Course Description:

Prerequisite: COP3503 Computer Science II
Description: This course provides an introduction and overview of security issues for organizational and institutional computing. Physical software and computing system security will be discussed. Students will be required to perform introductory security analysis, write code to automate some security preparedness tasks, and set up a protection scheme for a simple PC computer.

In order to streamline our programs, the faculty agreed to change the pre-req to CIS4253. The faculty feel this reduction also changes the course level of the class to that of Junior standing. We wish to change the course level from 4000 to 3000. Additionally, we wish to change the pre-req from COP3538 Data Structures Using OOP to COP3503 Computer Science II or COP2551 Introduction to OOP.
New Course Description:

Prerequisite: COP3503 Computer Science II or COP2551 Introduction to OOP
Description: This course provides a discussion of legal and ethical issues faced by computing professionals. These issues will be framed in terms of what it means to be a computing professional with topics such as responsibilities, ongoing professional development, and social involvement. The course will use the students' prior experiences in software development as a framework by demonstrating lecture concepts through coding examples and technical situations. State and national laws pertaining to computing will be presented. Students will be required to give and justify opinions about given computing situations. Students will also present an opinion to the class about one specific software development issue.
