Chronic Disease Epidemiology

Graduate (6xxx)

Graduate students from two programs enroll in this course, Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Exercise Science and Chronic Disease (MSH). The prerequisites for the course need to be changed to reflect different course prerequisites, depending on which program students are enrolled. The prerequisite "HSC3500 Epidemiology" formally listed as a prerequisite will be removed and replaced by more appropriate prerequisites: HSC6505 Epidemiology or APK6336 Physical Activity Epidemiology and Evidence Review.
New Course Description:
This advanced epidemiology course is intended to be a survey of the major chronic diseases and related risk factors with emphasis on recent epidemiology research and findings. Lectures will introduce the burden of chronic illnesses and will lead into specific diseases that are prevalent in western societies. Each chronic disease will include a discussion on the epidemiologic features including demographics, risk factors, prevention, treatment, early detection, and control of the disease. The specific chronic diseases that will be discussed are: cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, diabetes, arthritis and musculoskeletal diseases, and chronic neurologic disorders. The specific related risk factors that will be discussed are tobacco use, alcohol use, physical inactivity, diet and nutrition, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Prerequisites are HSC6505 "Epidemiology" or APK6336 "PA Epidemiology & Evid Review".
