10/03/13: Passed

10/11/13: Approved

Log Number: 201305-1

Change a degree-major-concentration of an existing program
Master of Science in Health - Health Science Major Exercise Sc. & Chronic Disease Concentration

Summary of the Changes:
Remove the prerequisite(s) HSC 4612 (Exercise Physiology) and 3351C (Physical Activity Epidemiology) from APK 6116C (Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques) and remove HSC 4612 (Exercise Physiology) and HSC 4615L (Laboratory in Exercise Physiology) from APK 6111C [currently APK 6111 (Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism), this APC changes it to APK 6111C (Medical Exercise Physiology) adding a laboratory component and making it 'Medical Exercise Physiology']. Remove PET 3080 (Physical Activity Epidemiology) and HSC 3500 (Epidemiology) as prerequisites for APK 6336 (Physical Activity Epidemiology and Evidence Review) and remove HSC 4612 (Exercise Physiology) and APK 4120C (Clinical Exercise Physiology) as prerequisites for APK 6107C (Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology). Add a laboratory component to APK 6111 (currently APK 6111 'Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism') making it APK 6111C (Medical Exercise Physiology) and add APK 6116C (Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques) as a prerequisite for both APK 6111C [currently APK 6111 'Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism' - changing to APK 6111C 'Medical Exercise Physiology'] and APK 6107C (Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology). Change name of APK 6056 from 'Advanced Biostatistics in Epidemiology' to 'Special Topics in Physical Activity Epidemiology'.
The names of the two focus elective sections shall change. The two current foci sections, 'Advanced Fitness Professional' and 'Research', will be changed to "Exercise Physiology Focus' and Physical Activity Epidemiology Focus' respectively.
PHI 5605, which is an existing course, will be added as an elective option under the Physical Activity Epidemiology focus for the students pursuing the MSH in Exercise Science and Chronic Disease beginning in the fall 2013. Permission has been provided by Dr. Bryan Bannon from Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies, and he has provided Dr. James Churilla the MSH Program Director with an approval letter.  Letter will be sent to APC Chair.  Changing APK 6111 (Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism') to APK 6111C (Medical Exercise Physiology) will change the credits from 3 to 4, increasing the total credits for the MSH in Exercise Science and Chronic Disease from 38 to 39. (Click here for the program of study)

Advanced Ex Phys & Metabolism

APK

Graduate (6xxx)

111

Change name and description of APK 6111 (Currently Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism). The name change will allow the breadth of the course to be expanded, thus providing additional clinical education to the students potentially working in clinical inpatient or outpatient environments. The name of this existing course will go from 'APK 6111 Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism' to 'APK 6111C Medical Exercise Physiology'. There will also be a lab added to APK 6111 (Currently Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism) making it APK 6111C Medical Exercise Physiology and increasing the credit hours from 3 to 4. Remove HSC 4612 Exercise Physiology and HSC 4615L Laboratory in Exercise Physiology as prerequisites and add APK 6116C Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques as a prerequisite for APK 6111 (Currently Advanced Exercise Physiology and Metabolism) - changing to APK 6111C (Medical Exercise Physiology).
New Course Description:
This course involves the study of how exercise and physical activity are utilized in medical and rehabilitative environments for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The mechanisms of medications typically prescribed for a plethora of chronic diseases will be addressed as well as their exercise interactions. The knowledge and skills (KS's) that help prepare students for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certification as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist will be covered. APK 6116C, Exercise Phys & Lab Techniques will serve as the prerequisite course for APK 6111C, Medical Exercise Physiology.

Exercise Phys & Lab Techniques

APK

Graduate (6xxx)

116 C

Remove the prerequisite(s) HSC 4612 (Exercise Physiology) and 3351C (Physical Activity Epidemiology) from APK 6116C (Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques). Based on adjusting our first semester exercise physiology course (APK 6116C - Exercise Physiology and Laboratory Techniques) to include a proportion of entry level material, the current prerequisite(s) are no longer required.
New Course Description:
This course will present rudimentary and intermediate physiological processes in the field of exercise physiology. The course will focus on cardiorespiratory fitness, energy balance, body composition, metabolism, and muscle physiology. The laboratory experiences will focus on metabolic testing (VO2, resting metabolic rate, lactate, thermoregulation), contrasting various body composition methodology, and exercise prescription.

PA Epidemiology & Evid Review

APK

Graduate (6xxx)

336

Remove PET 3080 (Physical Activity Epidemiology) and HSC 3500 (Epidemiology) as prerequisites for APK 6336 (Physical Activity Epidemiology and Evidence Review). Based on the first semester course APK 6336 presenting a proportion of entry level material, PET 3080 (Physical Activity Epidemiology) and HSC 3500 (Epidemiology) are not necessary as prerequisites.
New Course Description:

This course will discuss rudimentary concepts in epidemiology and examine the associations between various chronic diseases and exercise, physical activity and fitness. This course will integrate selected scientific studies and the learner will be able to distinguish study designs and explain study findings in a group setting. The learner will write scientific critiques for selected studies demonstrating their ability to evaluate study designs, methodology, data analysis, and findings.

Adv Biostats in Epidemiology

APK

Graduate (6xxx)

056

Change name of APK 6056 from 'Advanced Biostatistics in Epidemiology' to 'Special Topics in Physical Activity Epidemiology'. This change will permit a broader range of statistical and epidemiological topics to be offered in the most important areas of physical activity research.

New Course Description:

This course provides topics of special interest in physical activity epidemiology, which may vary each time the course is offered. Course content may be exercise science, advanced epidemiological methods in physical activity research, or a combination of both. The special interest topic, when offered, will be stated in the schedule booklet. The course is fixed in credit hours and may be repeated once with different content.
