Bachelor of Science - Radiography Major

Summary of the Changes:

The Brooks College of Health at UNF in conjunction with the Mayo School of Health Sciences (MSHS) proposes
to offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S) program in Radiography for students who want to prepare for a challenging and exciting career in radiography. B.S in Radiography aspires to prepare students with a strong scientific base curriculum in radiography and provides the opportunities to work directly with patients in the clinical and hospital settings. The degree will be limited access accepting 8 students every fall semester. The degree will require 120 credit hours and the upper-level radiography courses consisting of 60 credits. The radiography program is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The program was approved by the UNF Board of Trustees on June 11, 2013.

Course Description:

This course will provide the knowledge required for students to become competent in performing radiographic patient care activities: CPR, patient vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respirations), sterile and aseptic techniques, venipuncture, patient transfers, and proper use and care of patient medical equipment. The course will focus on patient and staff safety concerning the following areas: infection control including utilizing universal precautions, identifying and responding to medical emergencies, reporting safety events, environmental safety precautions, immobilization techniques, proper use of radiographic contrast material and pharmacological agents and utilizing mobile x-ray equipment. An introduction to patient population diversity is provided.

Course Description:

This course provides a review of the anatomy of the chest, abdomen, spine, lower and upper extremities. The course covers the radiographic examinations of the chest, abdomen, and upper extremity. Radiographic positioning instruction is utilized to demonstrate the anatomy of the systems listed above is provided in this course. Routine radiographic anatomy as well as pathology and trauma demonstrated on radiographic images will be included. Adaptive methods to modify standard positioning for trauma, pathology, and pediatric patients are provided in this course. The Evaluation of radiographic images will be emphasized.

Course Description:

The course introduces students to the profession of radiologic technology. It provides the foundation for understanding the radiographer's role in a radiology department. The course provides the basis for the ethical responsibility to their profession and institution. The course provides an introduction to the Radiographer's Code of Ethics and the Patient's Bill of Rights. Radiographic positioning terminology as it relates to patient anatomy, exposure factors, corresponding technique chart use, interaction with patients and methods to ensure radiation protection for patients and healthcare workers is provided in the course.

Course Description:

This course is a review of the anatomy of the axial skeletal system, gastrointestinal system, urinary system and the lower extremity. Radiographic positioning instruction utilized to demonstrate the human anatomy is provided in this course. Pathology and trauma adaptive positioning is included as well as evaluation of standard radiographic images. Positioning considerations and evaluating radiographs will be emphasized.

Course Description:

This course covers the topics of x-ray production, the emission spectrum from tungsten and molybdenum targets, interactions of radiation with matter, and the radiation dose as it relates to the radiographic image. Also, included is the effect of scattered and secondary radiation on radiographic images. This course includes how to control the effects of scatter radiation. Analog types of imaging (radiographic film and radiographic intensifying screens) are discussed in terms of structure and function. The role of the prime factors are discussed and how they affect density, contrast, and visibility of detail on the radiographic image. Exposure calculations are covered as well as technique chart development. Computed radiography and digital radiography are covered topics in this course. Prerequisite is RTE 3xxx, Radiation Physics.

Course Description:

The course consists of a 12 week clinical rotation in the following clinical areas on the Mayo Clinic campus: Mayo Clinic Diagnostic Radiology Section and the Mayo Clinic Hospital Radiology Section. Positioning and film critique of the projections covered in the Radiographic Procedures I and II courses are emphasized. Also covered are the principles covered in the Radiographic Exposure class. Non regular hours are part of this clinical rotation. Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX Patient Care Techniques and RTE 3XXX Clinical Practicum II.

Course Description:

The theory and mathematical concepts and formulas needed to adjust exposure techniques in radiography practice will be covered. Students will solve algebraic equations to determine how to adjust radiographic exposure factors. A review of the prime factors as well as intensifying screens, grids, and other ancillary factors are covered in this course. Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX Radiographic Exposure and RTE 3XXX Radiation Physics.

Course Description:

This course requires the student to perform a literature review of a radiologic topic of their choice and write a paper exploring the topic. The topic of the paper must pertain to the radiology imaging field. The paper will include the purpose, method and scope of the literature search. The student will draw on the information and opinions of others who have written on the topic and offer their own significant opinions on the issues discussed. The paper requirements dictate that it must include 5 to 7 pages of text in the body of the paper and be written according to the American Medical Association Manual of Style. A minimum of 5 references are required.

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to CT. The history, theory and required equipment for the imaging modality is presented, along with a discussion on exams performed in each area. Emphasis is placed on anatomy visualized in CT procedures.

Course Description:

This course reviews the types and sources of radiation and their interactions with matter. Effects of high doses on biologic systems are described and effects of low doses on populations are presented. Elements of radiation protection are included in this course. Quality management concepts, measurements, interpretation, and correcting actions and governmental regulations insuring compliance are presented. Advanced imaging concepts are presented as well. Concepts discussed are: fluoroscopy, tomography, automatic exposure control, and duplication of radiographs.

Course Description:

The course consists of a 14 week clinical rotation in the following clinical areas on the Mayo Clinic campus: Mayo Clinic Diagnostic Radiology Section, Mayo Clinic Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Section. The course also consists of a 2 week rotation in the CT areas of the clinic and the hospital. The practicum focuses on the anatomy, positioning and film critique of the projections covered in the Radiographic Procedures I, II and III courses as well as the principles covered in the Radiographic Exposure course.  Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX, Patient Care Techniques, RTE 4XXX, Clinical Practicum III, and RTE 4XXX, Computed Tomography.

Course Description:

This course consists of a 16 week clinical rotation in the following clinical areas on the Mayo Clinic Florida campus: Mayo Clinic Diagnostic Radiology Section and the Mayo Clinic Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Section. This course emphasizes radiographic examinations in the gastrointestinal system, urinary system, the axial skeletal system, and the skull. The course is also a continuation of the radiographic examinations of the chest, abdomen, upper extremity, and lower extremity. Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX, Patient Care Techniques, RTE 3XXX, Clinical Practicum I, and RTE 3XXX, Radiographic Procedures II.

Course Description:

This course consists of two components; a lab practicum and a 12 week clinical rotation in the following clinical areas on the Mayo Clinic campus: Mayo Clinic Radiology Diagnostic Section and the Mayo Clinic Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Section. The Lab Practicum encompasses patient identification, history taking, vital signs, introduction to ECG, introduction to medical laboratory reports, introduction to oxygen, introduction to suction devices, and radiographic x-ray suites. Students will also have rotations through the ancillary areas of the radiology department. The course emphasizes radiographic examinations of the respiratory system, plain abdominal radiographic examinations and the upper extremities. Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX, Patient Care Techniques, RTE 3XXX, Radiographic Procedures I, and RTE 3XXX, Foundations of Radiography.

Course Description:

The course also offers a 2 week clinical rotation in the CT departments of the clinic and the hospital. The practicum focuses on the anatomy, positioning and film critique of the projections covered in the Radiographic Procedures I, II, and III courses as well as the principles covered in the Radiographic Exposure course. Prerequisites are RTE 3XXX, Patient Care Techniques, RTE 4XXX, Clinical Practicum IV, and RTE 4XXX, Radiographic Procedures III.

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to MRI, Mammography and Neuro-cardiovascular imaging. Radiographic procedures of the skull are included in this course. An emphasis on pediatric radiography is also included in this course. The history, theory and required equipment for the imaging modality is presented, along with a discussion on exams performed in each area. Emphasis is placed on anatomy visualized by each modality.  A review of radiography topics is included to help prepare the student for the certifying exam given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
