Term Forgiveness

The Academics Standards Committee proposes the following changes to the Term Forgiveness Policy:

Undergraduate, degree-seeking students attempting their first baccalaureate degree may request term forgiveness for exactly one term at UNF.
1.
A student granted term forgiveness may not exercise grade forgiveness. Term forgiveness may not be used if grade forgiveness has been implemented.
2.
Requests will never be approved for the present term or for the immediately preceding term in which the student was enrolled.
3.
Students must complete at least one term at UNF before applying.
4.
This policy does not alter the permanent academic record; all courses attempted in the forgiven semester and related grades remain on the student's record.
5.
Although courses and grades in the forgiven term appear on the student's permanent academic record, the grade for the courses in forgiven term will not be calculated in any of the student's Grade Point Averages (See the Academic Average (Grade Point Average) policy.) The original grades will be calculated for the honors GPA.
6.
This policy reflects UNF grade point calculations only and does not affect the grade point calculation of outside agencies or other institutions who may use all grades, including repeated and forgiven grades, in their calculations of grade point averages.

Procedure

Students must complete and submit a Request for Term Forgiveness form to One-Stop Student Services before graduation.

Graduating students who wish to utilize term forgiveness should contact the Registrar via One-Stop to request special consideration. Forms must be submitted prior to the date posted on the academic calendar for commencement.

Original Term Forgiveness Policy

Effective fall 1994, undergraduate, degree-seeking students seeking their first baccalaureate degree may request term forgiveness for an entire term in which they performed unsatisfactorily due to personal or financial problems. To invoke term forgiveness, students must petition through the normal channels to appeal an academic decision.

1.
The student must complete and submit a Petition for Term Forgiveness signed by the department chair and dean of the college in which the student was enrolled during the term in which term forgiveness is requested.
2.
Petitions will never be approved for the present term or for the immediately preceding term in which the student was enrolled.
3.
Petitions must be approved prior to graduation
4.
No more than one petition for term forgiveness may be granted for any student at the University of North Florida.
5.
The petition can only be approved by the College that the student was enrolled in during the semester for which forgiveness is requested.
6.
A student may exercise only one forgiveness policy. In particular, a student granted term forgiveness may not exercise grade forgiveness
7.
If term forgiveness is approved, the student's permanent academic record (transcript) will indicate "Term Forgiveness" under the appropriate term. The original grades will remain on the transcript.
8.
For the purpose of graduation, the grades for all courses taken in the term forgiveness invoked will be treated as though the student had received a "W" in every course. None of the courses will count toward graduation; however, the originally recorded grades will be used in any "honors" calculations.
