Distance Learning - Definition of Distance Learning and Hybrid/Blended courses

The Distance Learning Committee would like to propose that UNF adopt, for administrative purposes, the following definitions adapted from those put forward by the Florida Distance Learning Task Force:1
 
  • A Distance Learning Course is a course in which at least 80 percent of the direct instruction of the course is delivered using some form of technology when the student and instructor are separated by time or space, or both.
 
  • A Hybrid/Blended Course is a course in which at least 50 percent and not more than 79 percent of the direct instruction of the course is delivered using some form of technology when the student and instructor are separated by time or space, or both.

The definition of Distance Learning Course has been taken verbatim from paragraph (a) of subsection (17) of section 1009.24, Florida Statutes,2which defines "A state university may assess a student who enrolls in a course listed in the Florida Higher Education Distance Learning Catalog, established pursuant to s. 1004.09, a per-credit-hour distance learning course fee." This is also the definition proposed by the Florida Distance Learning Task Force in its Final Report of
  February 26, 2009.3

The definition of Hybrid/Blended Course has been taken verbatim from the Florida Distance Learning Task Force's Final Report of February 26, 2009.

Section 1004.91 of the Florida Statutes (paragraph (a), subsection (1)) establishes the Florida Distance Learning Consortium4 to facilitate collaboration among public postsecondary educational institutions in their use of distance learning to increase student access to associate and baccalaureate courses and degree programs, to support institutions in their use of technology, and to help build partnerships among institutions, businesses, and communities."
