Graduate - Leadership, Counseling, and Instructional Technology

07/08-135 APC 3

Certificate: Add official certificate           program  within existing Educational     Leadership: School Leadership     program

Summary of the Changes:
The Florida Department of Education has authorized programs of Educational Leadership to offer certification-only coursework for students who already hold a master's degree in a content area. These students are required to complete eight (8) specified courses in order to be eligible to sit for the Florida Educational Leadership Exam and apply for certification through the Florida Department of Education. The creation of this certificate program would formalize a process in which we already engage: no courses would change, be added, or be deleted. We would like to offer an official certificate for students who elect only the eight specified courses rather than a second master's degree.

The eight courses are: EDG 6625 Curriculum Leadership in Schools (3 hours), EDA 6196 Leadership in Learning Organizations (3 hours), EDS 6130 Human Resource Management & Development (3 hours), EDA 6061 Introduction to Educational Leadership (3 hours), EDA 6215 Developing School & Community Resources (3 hours), EDA 6271 Technology and Educational Leadership (3 hours), EDA 6232 School Law (3 hours), and EDA 6242 School Finance (3 hours). The eight courses total 24 semester hours.

In support and explanation of this request, we have attached the Program of Study for Certification Only (Adopted May 2003).

  Practicum

Summary of the Changes:
The Master's prgram in Educational Leadership: School Leadership currently requires eight Major Requirement courses (24 hours), seven content (21 hours) plus the Practicum (3 hours).

Based on new mandates from the Florida Department of Education, students need to complete seven content courses before they enroll in the Practicum. Therefore, the following seven Major Requirement courses should be listed as prerequisites as EDA 6945 Practicum, EDA 6061 Introduction to Educational Leadership, EDA 6215 Developing School Community Relations, EDG 6625 Curriculum Leadership in the Schools, EDS 6130 Human Resource Development in Educational Leadership, and EDA 6242 School Finance.

  M.Ed.- Educational Leadership Major
 School Leadership Track

Summary of the Changes:
EDA 6271 Technology and Educational Leadership (3 hours) should be moved from "Major Electives" to "Major Requirements" in the Master's degree in Educational Leadership: School Leadership.

  Reasons for the change:
  (1) This course is already required for candidates in the certification-only program in School           Leadership.
  (2) New Florida State standards include an emphasis on technological skills.

This request represents a change of course status only, not any change to the existing course.

This change will results in no change to the total hours required for the degree program (39), but changes the Major Requirements from 24 to 27 semester hours and changes the Major Electives from 9 to 6 semester hours.(View the program of study)
