Mr. Wynton Marsalis Awarded an Honorary Degree

At its January 2013 meeting, the Faculty Affairs Committee discussed the awarding of an honorary doctoral degree to Mr. Wynton Marsalis. The Committee voted in favor of doing so and suggested that the degree might be designated as "Doctor of Humane Letters."

Mr. Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.  Mr. Marsalis is an artist of singular distinction, a household name who is synonymous with jazz and jazz education at the highest levels.  Mr. Marsalis' numerous contributions to jazz and jazz education have been recognized with many awards, including 11 Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize for Music, The National Medal of Arts (USA), Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and induction as a Knight in the Order of Arts and Literature (France), recognition by Time magazine as one of America's most promising leaders under age 40, and one of America's 25 most influential people.

Mr. Marsalis has directly influenced the UNF Music Flagship Program, having appeared as a guest artist and lecturer for the Great American Jazz Series, and mentoring former UNF students and current Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra members Vince Gardner and Marcus Printup.  The success of these musicians highlights the value and standing of the UNF Music Flagship Program.

Awarding an Honorary Doctorate to Mr. Marsalis will give UNF the opportunity to honor his work as a jazz musician and educator.  It will also allow UNF to thank him for his interest in our students and his support of their success.
