Greene called the workshop to order at 8:40 a.m.
Greene asked for approval of the minutes from the March 18 workshop. A MOTION
was made and seconded. The minutes were approved as presented.
Greene asked Provost Traynham to introduce Ms. Howell.
Traynham introduced Ms. Linda Howell as the director of the UNF Writes Program
Assessment. He stated that the university established this program to respond
to problems with student writing. Provost Traynham asked Ms. Howell to speak
about the program.
Howell stated that UNF Writes was established as a pilot program to create
awareness among students that faculty members across all disciplines expect
student to learn how to write well. She noted that the pilot program was
running through summer 2014 and a regular course would be offered fall 2014.
Howell explained how the program works and initial results, noting that, across
the board, students improved on all rubric scores. She spoke about transfer
students and students matriculating after completing high school through
accelerated mechanisms. She noted that each college would have a means to
identify and work with these students.
Howell clarified that, along with this university, there was a writing problem
across the nation. She stated that initial data from this program looked
promising and that UNF would continue with this pilot program, with the intent
to build the curriculum within the colleges.
Greene adjourned the workshop.
