Chair Taylor asked Provost Workman to introduce the speaker.

Provost Workman introduced Dr. Marnie Jones, Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, as the presenter for the Venture Studies Initiatives.

Dr. Jones began by talking about the role of liberal arts in the 21st century. She spoke about what the Venture Studies Initiatives offered, in regards to liberal arts, noting that this program offered an integrative and coherent curriculum to prepare students to become critical and reflective thinkers. She spoke about how the program reached outside of classroom walls into the Jacksonville community and the benefits of this approach to students.

Dr. Jones asked Vice President Serwatka to join the discussion to contrast the flexibility built into liberal arts programs of study versus programs of study in professional fields. He also presented a set of arguments supporting liberal arts degrees and arguments supporting professional studies degrees. Trustees attended break-out groups to discuss this issue and brought back their ideas to the group as a whole.
