The Rising Global Conscience

RocheHon. Douglas Roche, O.C., is an author, parliamentarian and diplomat, who has specialized throughout his 35-year public career in peace and human security issues. Mr. Roche was a Senator, Member of the Canadian Parliament, Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament, and Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta.  He was elected Chairman of the United Nations Disarmament Committee at the 43rd General Assembly in 1988. The author of 18 books, his latest is Global Conscience  (Novalis, 2007).  A previous book, The Human Right to Peace (Novalis, 2003), was the Canadian Book Review Annual Editor’s Choice scholarly selection for July-August 2005.  He has contributed chapters to 17 additional books.

Mr. Roche holds seven honourary doctorates from Canadian and American universities and has received numerous awards for his work for peace and non-violence, including the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation for World Peace Award (Canada) and the United Nations Association’s Medal of Honour.  In 1995, Pope John Paul II presented him with the Papal Medal for his service as Special Adviser on disarmament and security matters, and in 1998 the Holy See named him a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.  He received the 2003 Peace Award of the Canadian Islamic Congress and the 2005 Luminosa Award for Unity from the Focolare Movement, North America.  In 2005, he was given Lifetime Achievement awards from both the Canadian Pugwash Group and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.  He is an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Mr. Roche is Chairman of the Middle Powers Initiative, an international network of seven non-governmental organizations specializing in nuclear disarmament issues.  He is a member of the Pugwash Council, which won the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize for its work for nuclear disarmament. Conflict Transformation: Beyond the Superpower Myth

ns redo 2Ambassador Soderberg is an author, public commentator, and Visiting Distinguished Scholar at the University of North Florida.  From 2001-2005, she served as Vice President for Multilateral Affairs of the International Crisis Group in New York, a non-profit conflict prevention organization.  She served in the White House as the third-ranked official on the National Security Council (1993-1996) and as Alternate Representative to the United Nations (1997-2001), with the rank of Ambassador.  Prior to joining the Administration, she served as Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy.  She has been active in national politics over the last twenty years, serving in a variety of positions on the campaigns of the Democratic nominee for President. 

Her first book, The Superpower Myth: The Use and Misuse of American Might, was published in March 2005.  Her forthcoming book, Power and Prosperity: A Better Way to Spread American Values, is due out in 2007.   She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the Board of Concern Worldwide, and serves on the advisory board of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy and the Tannenbaum Center.  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed her in 2002 as President of the Sister City Program of the City of New York, a position she held until January 2006.  She speaks and publishes regularly in leading newspapers and journals on national security policy.  She is a frequent commentator on national and international television and radio.

Conflict Transformation as Personal Transformation: FIRST THINGS FIRST
Bryant and ShirleyThis innovation session will be an interactive opportunity to explore how conflict transformation begins and ends with personal transformation. The session will be set within the context of conflict transformation in Jacksonville's diverse communities.

    Bryant and Shirley are President and Vice President of Mountaintop Institute, Inc.  in Jacksonville, Florida. Their work engages the public and private sector on themes of diversity, inclusion, and equity.
