The
Cost of Advancing Technology
Dr. Peggy Emmelhainz, an Associate Professor in the Department of Management,
Marketing, and Logistics has been advising one of her students, John Jinkner,
on his honors thesis. Jinkner, a senior majoring in transportation/logistics
and management, is the first honors student to carry out a research project
in the College of Business Administration. With Emmelhainz's guidance,
Jinkner is
analyzing costing methodologies for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
implementation and use.
EDI is the computer-to-computer
exchange of information in standard format between companies. While considerable
research has been done on the need for and benefits of EDI, limited research
has been done regarding the long-term cost of EDI or on methods for accurately
predicting the cost of a corporate-wide EDI implementation.
Product
Analysis in Different World Markets
For the better part of the past six years Dr. A. Coskun Samli, Professor
of Marketing in the Department of Management, Marketing and Logistics,
and his students have been researching the market characteristics and
potentials of different world markets as they relate to specific products.
Each year, students in Samli's International Marketing class are assigned
a project to produce a report that develops a marketing plan for a given
product in a specific country.
Some of these reports have
been used by Jacksonville exporters to gain information about markets
or potential markets for their products.
In putting together a marketing
plan for a specific product in a particular country, the students must
research qualitative and quantitative aspects of the market and then calculate
the market potential. They consider the consumption patterns and history
of the market, the culture and education levels of the population, and
other properties of the market.
