This facility is an Audubon International Golf Course. That means we strive to balance our human activities with the needs of local wildlife.

Audubon International

Audubon International is a company that helps land owners choose environmentally sustainable options. Humans and wildlife co-exist in Audubon International communities. Only selected chemicals are used on the course. Design, construction and management are approved by Audubon International. UNF students, faculty and staff developed our Environmental Master Plan alongside Audubon International. We strive to reach the highest rating, the Audubon International Gold Signature Level of Sustainability.

This Facility Seeks to Reduce its Ecological Impact.

An Environmental Master Plan takes wildlife into account when making decisions. All organisms are tolerated on this course, even dangerous ones. Please leave all wildlife alone on the course. Habitat restoration is a part of our plan including native plants, nest boxes and bat houses. We also recycle, with your help.

Native Plant Landscaping

All plants used in this facility are native to Florida, they grow naturally here. This means they give the right kind of food to keep wildlife healthy. We do not need any fertilizers or pesticides on surrounding landscaping. By planting natives you can attract more wildlife to your yard. Plants are marked by name in front of the building. We do not water our native plants either, they just don’t need it!

Are We Making a Difference?

We monitor our progress using chemical tests for water, soil, and turf. Healthy amphibian and reptile populations are a sign of a healthy ecosystem. When ponds are healthy, excess fertilizers are being absorbed by native plants.

Water Hazards

The water hazards here look more like ponds. We have added native aquatic plants to attract wildlife. These plants also absorb nutrients washed off the course. They slow erosion along the shoreline and provide hiding spots for many organisms.

Education

This facility hopes to combine education with recreation and research. Information about local outdoor activities is available inside. Signs along the course tell you about sustainable management here. By hosting the First Tee program of Jacksonville, children that might not otherwise get the chance, can enjoy the game of golf. We can also schedule guided tours to discuss sustainable business at UNF and how you can improve your yard to attract more wildlife at home. The Audubon Natural Resource Manager is on-site for any questions at 620-1810 or rmeyer@unf.edu.
