The Board of Trustees at the University of North Florida affirmed the appointment of Dr. Mark Dawkins as the seventh dean of the Coggin College of Business and his tenure as a professor of accounting and Distinguished Professor for Excellence of the PhD Project. He started his new position on campus yesterday.
“I am excited to join UNF and the Coggin College of Business and look forward to working with the outstanding faculty, staff, students, alumni, employers, corporate partners and donors to advance the University and Coggin,” said Dawkins, who is originally from Jacksonville.
He succeeds Dr. Ajay Samant, who served as dean of the Coggin College for five years. He is currently on administrative sabbatical and will return next month to the University as a professor in the Department of Accounting and Finance.
Dawkins is the former associate dean of Academic Programs and professor of accounting in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. He served as associate dean for six years and on the UGA accounting faculty since 1994.
“I am delighted that Dr. Dawkins will be joining UNF. He brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to his new position as dean of the Coggin College of Business,” said Dr. Earle Traynham, UNF interim provost in the Office of Academic Affairs. “I am confident that he will utilize this experience to advance the mission of the College as a center of global teaching and learning, nationally-recognized logistics education, entrepreneurial activity, interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarly research.”
Dawkins’ research interests include connecting academic research to business practice, faculty publications, earnings assessment, bankruptcy, market effects of information asymmetry and market reactions to information disclosures. He has published articles in numerous journals, including the Journal of Managerial Issues, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial & Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Business, Finance & Accounting, Management Accounting Quarterly and many more.
He has received several awards, including the Alpha Kappa Psi Accounting Teacher of the Year Award (2006 and 2003), co-recipient of the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Teacher of the Year award at UGA (2006 and 2003) and was one of five recipients of the inaugural Ernst & Young Inclusive Excellence Award for Accounting and Business School Faculty. He is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Accounting Doctoral Student Association of the PhD Project, to name a few.
Dawkins received his doctorate in accounting from Florida State University, as well as a master’s degree in business administration and accounting, both from the University of Florida. He earned his bachelor’s degree in management from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
