Florida Gov. Rick Scott recently appointed retired Maj. Gen. Douglas Burnett, former adjutant general of Florida, as a member of the University of North Florida’s Board of Trustees, the governing body for the University.
Burnett, a St. Augustine resident, succeeds Bruce Taylor III, former chairman of the UNF Board of Trustees and founder of Taylor Engineering, Inc. His term began July 2 and ends January 2020. Burnett has been the president of Doug Burnett & Associates since 2010.
He has been a member of the St. Johns River Water Management District governing board since 2013 and previously served as a member of the Florida State College at Jacksonville District Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2012.
Burnett served as the adjutant general of Florida from 2001 to 2010, commanding both the Florida Army and Air National Guard with responsibility for the military education, training and readiness of over 12,500 personnel. He has received many military and National Guard honors and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.
The UNF Board of Trustees was established in Florida’s Constitution June 28, 2001. The 13-member Board of Trustees is responsible for cost-effective policy, implementing and maintaining high-quality education programs consistent with the University’s mission, performance evaluation and developing a process meeting state policy, budgeting and education standards.
Board members are appointed by the governor (six citizen members) and by the Florida Board of Governors (five citizen members). These appointees must be confirmed by the Florida Senate. The remaining two members are the president of the Faculty Association and the president of Student Government at the University.
UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.
