UNF Week of One Celebration Features Award-Winning North Star Play

Department of Public Relations
The University of North Florida will present Gloria Bond Clunie’s award-winning play, “North Star,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, and Friday, Feb. 15, in the Adam W. Herbert University Center, Building 43, Room 1058. Live music begins at 6:45 p.m. each evening, with a panel discussion following the Feb. 14 performance. This event is free and open to the public.
The play centers on a young girl’s search for her place in society during the rising tensions of the civil rights struggle and her community’s battle for freedom. The production is directed by UNF student Cherrelle Fant, winner of the Dean's Leadership Council Transformational Learning Scholarship.
The production opens one up to the real human social experiences associated with discrimination and oppression against anyone for any reason prior to desegregation. The director’s desire is for the audience to understand that being color blind doesn’t solve a problem. Instead, cultural sensitivity and awareness do. The cast comprises UNF students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Jacksonville community.
“North Star” is part of the University’s Week of One diversity week and is sponsored by UNF’s Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, in conjunction with the Department of English Theater/Drama Program at UNF. Week of One is a celebration of diversity in the community with a myriad of activities designed to acknowledge the richness of diverse and inclusive cultures, as well as perspectives across campus constituencies and the at-large public.
