Joshua Foer, author of "Moonwalking with Einstein," will discuss "Moonwalking with Success" at the University of North Florida at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at the Andrew A. Robinson Jr. Theater, Building 14A, as part of the UNF Reads! Outliers Series.
UNF Reads! was designed to ease the entering student's transition to college-level academics. Over the summer, all incoming freshmen and many faculty, staff and upper-division students read a book selected by the Undergraduate Studies Council. Throughout the fall semester, the whole campus has engaged in multiple activities and events creating a community-wide discussion of the UNF Reads! book. This activity creates a common intellectual experience focusing on ideas that cut across much of the general education curriculum.
This year's UNF Reads! selection is "Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcolm Gladwell. UNF is hosting events as a part of an Outliers event series, which invites outliers in various fields and disciplines to come to the University and share their success stories."Moonwalking With Einstein" has a lot in common with Gladwell's best-sellers: it popularizes scientific concepts in a breezy, accessible fashion, while cheerfully dispensing some practical insights and entertaining anecdotes.
Foer is joining UNF as an outlier in memory. In his book, he recounts his year-long quest to improve his memory under the tutelage of top "mental athletes." He draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of remembering and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human memory. From the United States Memory Championship to deep within the author's own mind, "Moonwalking with Einstein" reminds us that, in every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.
Foer's writing has appeared in the New Yorker, National Geographic, Esquire, Slate, Outside, The New York Times and several other publications. "Moonwalking with Einstein," an international best-seller published in 33 languages, is his first book. He is the co-founder of the online guide to the world's wonders and curiosities, "Atlas Obscura," and is also the co-founder of the design competition, Sukkah City.
