The University of North Florida Women’s Center and V-Day 2013 will present the One Billion Rising spotlight campaign from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, on the Osprey Plaza at the Student Union.
This year, V-Day celebrates its 15th anniversary with the One Billion Rising spotlight campaign. One Billion Rising began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world's population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. One Billion Rising has ignited a global movement, uniting activists, actors, playwrights, political agencies, celebrities and artists, all for the cause of ending gender-based violence.
UNF students, faculty, and staff will come together with others across the city and the world to express their outrage, dance and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end to violence against women once and for all. This event will feature student dance performances and a platform for poetic expression. The Jacksonville community is invited to join in with the UNF Women’s Center and participate in this movement.
For more than 20 years, the UNF Women’s Center has been a vital hub of learning and advocacy for the entire University community. The Women’s Center provides emergency loans, victim advocacy services, rape awareness education as well as information and referrals on a variety of women’s issues, in addition to hosting performances, lectures and events each year.
