University of North Florida head men’s basketball coach Matthew Driscoll announced the promotion of Byron Taylor to assistant coach for the Ospreys.
At UNF, Taylor has spent the previous two seasons serving as the team’s director of basketball operations. He replaces Jeremy Shyatt who left North Florida to join the coaching staff of his father, Larry, at the University of Wyoming.
“From the start, Byron’s high character is one of the things that I most appreciate about him,” said Driscoll. “Byron has done everything we asked of him and more without hesitation or question. His maturity and growth in the coaching profession has been impressive. Byron’s personality, competitive nature, and ability to solve issues quickly made it an easy decision for me to promote him to our full-time coaching staff. He is blessed to have three very experienced coaches already in place that have been and will continue to be valuable assets for him as he continues building all the skills necessary to be successful in this profession.”
In his new coaching position, he will be involved in a variety of areas including on-court coaching, opponent scouting, camps, team academic progress, skill development and recruiting.
“I am very appreciative to Coach Driscoll and the staff for bringing me in two years ago and giving me a chance to experience what the college coaching experience is about,” said Taylor. “All the coaches have been great to me allowing me to watch, listen and ask questions about all different aspects of the coaching business. I have definitely learned a lot in the last two years and I am just excited to get started. I’m ready to do whatever needs to be done in order for this program to take the next step.”
Taylor came to UNF after completing his playing career at Florida A&M University in 2008-09. The Tallahassee, Fla., native was a three-year letterwinner for the Rattlers, appearing in 84 career games. He graduated from FAMU with a bachelor of science in economics and a minor in business, and was named to the 2008-09 and 2007-08 MEAC All-Academic Teams.
The son of a coach, Taylor earned four varsity letters as a starter at Florida High School including the final three under the guidance of his father, Barry.
