Two University
of North Florida students
who serve as editors for the Spinnaker, the weekly student-operated campus
newspaper at UNF, recently brought home awards for their work with the
publication.
UNF
senior Erik Tanner, photo editor at the Spinnaker, is a Beaches resident and
won first place for photojournalism in the 2010 Blank Slate Annual Design Contest
for College Students. Spinnaker Layout Editor Dan Rosemund, a senior and
Southside resident, earned third place in the magazine cover category.
“These
recognitions mean even more to UNF because the Spinnaker was competing against
papers from other universities known for their design, including Ball State,
Savannah College of Art and Design and the University of Miami,”
said John Timpe, Spinnaker advisor.
The
Chicago Tribune judged the 11th annual contest, sponsored by a chapter of the
Society for News Design at Michigan
State University.
Tanner’s photo of a homeless person was one of the shots featured in the “Photo
of the Week” space that runs in the Spinnaker. Rosemund designed his cover
entry “Savior or Socialist?” to complement a story on President Barack Obama.
Last
year, the Spinnaker won national recognition for its website, unfspinnaker.com,
and the paper also was named the second-best college newspaper in the state in
the Florida College Press Association’s annual contest. Additionally, the Spinnaker
won the Associated Collegiate Press’ Best of Show award for the country in
2007.
UNF’s
first student newspaper started in January 1974 and was called the Halyard. On
August 17, 1977, the student newspaper was dubbed The Spinnaker, the same name it
has held for more than 30 years.
