University of
North Florida freshman golfer Kevin Phelan is Pebble Beach bound after
qualifying for 110th U.S. Open Championship on Monday at McArthur Golf
Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. Phelan shot rounds of 73-65 (138) to co-medal
and secure a place at the U.S. Open.
“Unbelievable
accomplishment by Kevin today,” said UNF head golf coach Scott
Schroeder. “This just caps what has been a great freshman year for him.
We will all be looking forward to watching him play the best in the
world next week.”
In
the first round on Monday, Phelan made a triple bogey on his final hole
to finish at one-over par 73. In Phelan’s final round Phelan made his
30 yard flop shot on his final hole for an eagle and a spot in the U.S.
Open.
This
season for the Ospreys, Phelan recorded 18 sub-par rounds en-route to
finishing second (66-72-70, 208) at the NCAA South Central Regional at
The Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. He had eight top-10 finishes
during the season and earned Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Month honors
for March after posting four top-10’s during the month.
Phelan,
co-medaled with Nationwide Tour member, Gary Woodland who shot rounds
of 67 and 71. Travis Hampshire took the final spot with rounds of 72
and 67 in the sectional qualifying round.
Also
competing was former UNF golfer Matt Borchert who was a member of the
Osprey team 1997-2000. Borchert finished seventh with rounds of 76-69
(145).
The U.S. Open Championship will be conducted at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif. on June 17-20.
