The University of North Florida men's basketball roster keeps growing after Osprey head coach Matthew Driscoll added signee Andy Diaz to his 2009-10 lineup.
The Miami native is Driscoll's second signee from South Florida and heads to UNF after earning first team all-state honors last season.
"This is another addition that brings us versatility as a player and has the character that we value in a person," Driscoll said. "He is best described as a modern-day hybrid that can play multiple positions and guard multiple players on the defensive side."
Diaz earned a spot in the South Florida All-Star Basketball Classic where he played alongside future UNF teammate Jerron Granberry. That contest - which took place at American Airlines Arena - was not the first time Diaz and Granberry found themselves on the court together. The two incoming UNF freshmen also played AAU basketball together for coach Gaston "Chachi" Rodriguez for Florida Gold Coast.
"Andy is very versatile," Rodriguez said. "He can play inside, he has a good long-range shot and he can put the ball on the floor and take it to the basket."
Diaz averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds last season for coach Eric Beneby at Miami Lakes High School in earning first team All-Dade County honors for the second year in a row. The 6-7 Diaz was a two- time team MVP at Miami Lakes and was also a McDonalds All-American nominee. Diaz also competed on the men's volleyball team.
Diaz will join fellow UNF signees Brad Haugabrook and David Jeune as well as Granberry on the 2009-10 squad.
