Jerron Granberry is the latest name that will be added to the 2009-10 University of North Florida men's basketball roster after the Miami, Fla., prep star signed a National Letter of Intent to play at UNF.
Granberry helped lead his team to a state championship at the 6A level his senior season, helping Coral Reef High School cap off a 27-4 campaign. Granberry led the team in field goal percentage and rebounds and was second on the Coral Reef squad in assists. The 6-5 Granberry averaged 19.2 points per game to go along with 9.5 rebounds in earning first team all-state honors his senior season.
"Jerron's versatility along with his size and decision making will give us the ability to play him in multiple positions," UNF coach Matthew Driscoll said. "His ability to help build a team from four wins his freshman year to a state title was icing on the cake as far as we were concerned."
Granberry's prep career didn't start off as well as it ended with his team scraping up four wins his first year in a Coral Reef uniform. Behind Granberry's leadership, the Coral Reef boy's basketball team continued to improve, winning 16 games in each of its next two seasons. Granberry earned All-Dade County honorable mention honors from the Miami Herald as a sophomore before earning third team honors as a junior.
His high school career culminated at the 2009 6A state championship game where he helped rally his team from a 12 point first half deficit to a win. Granberry scored 15 points in the victory, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers and leading all players with four steals.
"Jerron will help UNF in many different ways," Coral Reef head coach Gaston "Chachi" Rodriguez said. "He is a great teammate and unbelievably competitive. He hates to lose."
Granberry - who was rated the top rebounder in Dade County by Breakdown Magazine - will enroll at UNF in the fall.
