Department of Media Relations and Events
The Economics and Geography Department in the Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida announces a new Website for its Local Economic Indicators Project (LEIP), updated with new and pertinent information on our regional economy. Check out the new LEIP Website at www.leipjax.org.
“After five years collecting economic data for Jacksonville, the LEIP team recently recognized that we now have sufficient information to provide statistical analysis to assist the Jacksonville community in understanding the economic climate in the region,” said Dr. Paul Mason, chair of UNF’s Economics and Geography Department. The LEIP team of Mason and eight UNF students focus on unemployment rates, stock prices, the consumer price index and a leading economic indicator.
On the new Website, you can still find the monthly LEIP data; but you can also access Websites for local, state, national and international business and economic data, subscribe for free to LEIPLINE to read quarterly articles about the Jacksonville economy—including in the first issue how the 2005 Super Bowl affected retail sales in our area—and find out more about our data sources and our people.
LEIP’s main function is the collection of data from all over the Jacksonville area. This data allows the LEIP team to analyze price changes in order to measure inflation, adjust unemployment rates for seasonality, report stock price changes and produce an index of leading indicators to facilitate comparing our local numbers with similar numbers nationwide.
LEIP is sponsored by Heritage Capital, American Enterprise Bank and The Florida Times-Union.
