Contact: Joanna Norris, Assistant Director
Department of Media Relations and Events
A day-long series of educational respect workshops will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, in the University of North Florida’s Robinson Student Life Building (Building 14), Rooms 1601-6. The workshops will provide high school, middle school and elementary school teachers, students, administrators and pre-service educators with the knowledge and tools to successfully create a culture to end anti-gay bias and harassment in schools.
Participants will develop an awareness and understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) diversity issues, including terms, definitions and experiences of LGBT individuals, and common attitudes toward them. Participants will also identify developmental strategies for sensitive and appropriate interventions and advocacy when LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT are bullied and harassed. Local, statewide, national and Internet-based resources/tools for assisting LGBT students, parents and families will be provided.
Cost for the conference is $10.00 and includes lunch and a resource packet. Registration is required and space is limited to the first 150 registrants. Register at www.unf.edu/lgbtrc. For more information, contact the LGBT Resource Center at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (904) 620-2939.
