Supervisor of Elections Office and UNF Host 2008 Mock Convention
The Duval County Supervisor of Elections Office and the University of North Florida will host a mock political convention on Tuesday, Nov. 13, and Wednesday, Nov. 14, at UNF’s University Center for approximately 900 Duval County high school and college students.
The two-day Convention will allow student delegates to represent different states, build party platforms, hear from presidential candidates, guest speakers and nominate their Republican and Democratic choices for the 2008 presidential election.
“UNF is excited to support this type of civic education. This mock convention is a great real-world experience for students to expand their knowledge of political parties and conventions,” said UNF President John A. Delaney.
Since 2003, the 17- to 25-year-old age group has become the largest percentage of registered voters in Duval County. In January, the Supervisor of Elections Office registered more than 5,300 Duval County students in two days, making it evident to the community that young adults want the opportunity to become more involved in the electoral process.
“The objective of the Convention is to encourage students to become active participants in their futures. It will afford both open dialogue on issues that are important to the students and exposure to candidates who do not always adequately address young adults as viable members of the voting population,” stated Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland.
“The mock convention is an excellent way for students to actively engage in the political process,” said Dr. Mathew Corrigan, chair of UNF’s Department of Political Science and Public Administration. “If students are engaged, they will in turn become active civic participants.”
