Environmental Conference Highlights Urban Development

The Environmental Center at the University of North Florida and The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Center for Ethics, Public Policy and the Professions are sponsoring an environmental ethics conference, “Ethical Aspects of Urban Development in Northeast Florida,” on Thursday, Oct. 19, and Friday, Oct. 20, at the University Center on the UNF campus.

The conference kicks off with a banquet October 19 at 6 p.m., featuring keynote speaker William Throop, provost and professor of philosophy and environmental studies at Green Mountain College in Vermont. He will discuss the role of the university in sustainable urban development.

The conference continues on October 20 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with various speakers from faculty at UNF, Flagler and Edward Waters colleges as well as the local community. Topics include Moral Matters, Frameworks for Policy, Moral Aspects of Community Organization, Describing the Problems and Innovative Projects in Jacksonville. The keynote luncheon speaker will be Charles Kibert, University of Florida Holland Professor in the School of Building Construction. He will discuss “An Ethical Framework for Sustainability.”
