UNF Board of Trustees Chair Korman - Charge to the UNF Presidential Search Committee
There are few things more important to the University of North Florida (UNF) than the selection of its next president. I am grateful to all of you for your willingness to undertake this important work. And, thank you Trustee Kevin Hyde for your willingness to lead us through this process. While ultimate authority for selection of UNF’s next president lies with the Board of Trustees, this committee plays a vital role in the success of the search.
In the broadest of terms, my charge to you is to develop and execute a successful search process. To be successful, the search process must be transparent, inclusive and robust. These qualities are reflected in the Florida Board of Governors Regulation that will guide the search. I would encourage you to review the regulation in detail, as it identifies responsibilities of the search committee.
Let me comment on a few of these responsibilities:
Since we plan to retain an executive search firm to assist with the search, I would ask the search committee to begin the work of selecting an executive search firm to recommend to the Board of Trustees so that the Board can approve the search firm by its June 13, 2017 meeting. That way, our executive search firm will be on board by summer 2017.
Additionally, I would encourage the search committee to begin to discuss a process to seek input from internal and external constituents regarding key characteristics we are seeking in our next president. This type of input is vital to the committee/search consultant’s efforts to establish recommended criteria for the position. The Board has requested input on the recommended position criteria and will expect updates on the committee’s work in this area at Board meetings. The position criteria will come to the Board of Trustees for approval, prior to advertising for the position.
Once the position is advertised and candidates apply, this committee will play one of its most important roles, which is the thorough review and evaluation of candidates’ materials. This committee will be responsible for screening the pool of candidates, speaking with a short list of candidates and ultimately recommending to the Board of Trustees an unranked list of at least three (3) qualified candidates whom you believe have the background, experience, skills and passion to serve as UNF’s next president.
The Board of Trustees' hope is to select a final candidate in a time frame that would allow the Board to submit the president-elect’s candidacy to the Board of Governors for confirmation at its March 2018 meeting.
