Outreach with Public Schools
Northside Literacy Project: In collaboration with the City of Jacksonville, Duval County Public Schools, Jacksonville Children’s Commission, and Mayor Peyton’s office, the UNF Community Outreach Council is undertaking a literacy project working to enhance literacy with elementary school children. UNF Faculty, Staff, and Students will be trained in basic literacy instruction and both read with and to elementary school children at identified sites.
Arts Healing Our Youth
In collaboration with Duval County Public Schools, the UNF Fine Arts Center will fund admission for several hundred Duval County Public School students to attend 2006 -2007 UNF Fine Arts Center Season programs such as “The True Story of Pocahontas” (Oct 25, 2006) and the program “Majigeen,” documenting Anta Majigeen Mjaay’s experience of slavery and life on Kingsley Plantation (April 12, 2007).
Engineering Experience
Working with faculty and staff from the UNF Department of Engineering, Duval County Public School Students will be selected for participation in an on-campus event demonstrating basic laws of physics and engineering (an egg drop!). Specifically, students will work on collaborative projects seeking to design a vessel that protects the (uncooked) egg when dropped from varying heights and be encouraged to explore sciences as an area of interest in their studies.
UNF Presidential Community Outreach Ambassadors
The UNF Department of Residence Life will establish a program for two dozen students who will compete for the designation of a UNF Presidential Community Ambassador. Selected students will volunteer for literacy and additional outreach programming according to their areas of interest. The UNF Presidential Ambassador’s program will only be available to students who live in UNF residence life facilities.
