Organization of a Professional Poster

The way in which your poster is organized will influence the effectiveness of communication of ideas. Your poster should have:

Column Format

Your audience will be traveling past posters. Using columns will make information more accessible as readers pass by your poster in a crowd.

Organizational Cues

You can also use organizational cues such as numbers and arrows to direct your audience in the progression of information in your poster.

"Reader Gravity"

In the English language, most people read from left to right and from top to bottom. Your poster's text should therefore run left to right and top to bottom. Wheildon (1995) referred to this phenomenon as "reader gravity."  (Wheildon, 1995)

Informative Headings

Headings should be hierarchical with more important points in larger font. Rather than simply using sub-titles such as "Introduction," headings can be used to summarize main points in larger fonts. Your audience will then be able to comprehend the main points of your presentation by reading the headings alone. Headings will therefore lead your reader through your poster.

Balance of Graphics and Text & Use of " White Space "  

Your poster should have symmetry. Figures and text should be balanced and separated by "white space" (i.e., empty space). Symmetry is achieved when the images and text are aligned horizontally, vertically, and diagonally.
