Redesigned Course: Advanced Reporting

Major Redesign Issue: As it is currently designed, the course only takes students half-way through the reporting process. It needs to take them all the way through it by teaching them how to create stories in multi-platform environments. The redesign would add a blogging component, a video blogging component, and a video capturing and streaming for the internet component.

Major Redesign Issue: Augmentations to the course intend to increase understanding of basic physics concepts and problem-solving skills. Both areas are extremely important for any science major.

Redesigned Course: Advanced Biopsychology

Major Redesign Issue: This course is particularly amenable to hands-on learning, with opportunities for students to directly measure physiology. However, providing a lecture-only format does not take advantage of this possibility. The redesign would allow for activities and demonstrations that involve problem-based, cooperative, and active learning.

Redesigned Course: College Writing

Major Redesign Issue: I teach argumentation and critical thinking. I actively look for ways for students to recognize and correct patterns of error, an ongoing complaint of professors in other disciplines. The redesign will make the class more engaging and clear in terms of student outcomes and management of specific skills.

Major Redesign Issue: An extensive redesign of this fairly theoretical course with a “global” focus, into a more practice-oriented course with a “local” focus.

Redesigned Course: Graduate Nutrition Research

Major Redesign Issue: The expansive content is daunting to teach in one semester. It will be important to create more engaging assignments that help students apply the concepts to the bigger picture, to increase student interest in the methods, and to develop a strategy to move students more effectively from the pieces of research to the writing of a proposal.

Redesigned Course: AML3041 American Literature

Major Redesign Issue: Scope of the course necessarily sacrifices depth to coverage. But coverage itself remains an elusive and problematic ideal for a number of reasons. I would like to engage students by more fully utilizing technology as a means to humanize each author.
