CATALOGING RESPONSIBILITIESThe Cataloging Department has primary responsibility for organization and access to the Library's collections. We create and maintain the Library's online catalog. The catalog allows access by author, title, subject, call number and many other elements. We add to and maintain the order of all these catalog elements so that they are coordinated and up-to-date. When you use the catalog, be sure to check the Searching Guide if you need help in formulating your searches. Organization is also done by classifying materials, i.e. assigning call numbers to them, from one of several classification arrangements used in the Library. The call numbers bring together titles on the same subject or by the same author. The classification arrangement used in most of the collection is the Library of Congress system. If you know the basic call number area in which you are interested, you can go directly to library shelves to browse or search the library catalog by call number and find all materials in that call number. All types of material are classified including print, audiovisual and electronic.
