BIOGRAPHICAL / HISTORICAL NOTE

The Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women was established as an advisory commission on May 30, 1972. It was upgraded to full commission status in 1982. The Commission is comprised of 25 members appointed by the Mayor to three-year terms. Their stated purpose is "to develop a public consciousness of the talents of women, regardless of race, color or creed, as equal partners in the private, business and civic community; to encourage women to become actively involved in matters pertaining to the community; to work toward utilization of capable women in roles of leadership; and to serve as a source of information for women on legal and human rights, economic equality, health and discrimination."

Each year, as part of Women's History Month, an annual Breakfast is held in March where the Women's History Month poster honorees are presented. Poster nominees meet the following criteria:

  • Contributed a lasting value to the Jacksonville community
  • Reside in Jacksonville or adjacent county
  • Served as an exemplary role model for young women and others
  • Encountered life experiences and/or occupations that have been varied and meaningful

A complete list of past honorees is available on the Commission website. Other Commission projects include an Equal Pay Day Luncheon held every April, the publication of women's resources information, support of women's health programs, career mentoring of young women, and workshops and networking events for women.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of twenty-two framed posters, from March 1986 - March 2008, and other printed materials, including bookmarks, newsletters, and newsclippings relating to Women's History Month events. Four photographs of the 2005 Annual Breakfast are also included. The bulk of the collection are framed posters; other printed materials are mixed for each year.
