ABSTRACT

The collection provides historical documentation of tourism and lodging accommodations in Northeast Florida in the late nineteenth and early to mid-twentieth centuries. The core of the collection relates to hotel accommodations, particularly text and visual materials representing once notable and no longer extant urban Jacksonville hotels. (Chiefly Hotels Andrew Jackson, Aragon, Carling, George Washington, Mason, Mayflower, Roosevelt, Seminole, Windle, and Windsor.)

HISTORICAL NOTE

The majority of the materials date from the late nineteenth and early to mid-twentieth centuries.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection contains printed materials: brochures, business cards, souvenir photo albums, folders, menus, programs, shipping labels, and stationery. Publishers/printers include: Jacksonville Tourist and Convention Tourist Bureau, Jacksonville City Council Advertising Committee, Arnold Printing Company, DaCosta Printing and Publishing House, H.& W.B. Drew Company, Miller Press, and Tutewiler Press. Unique early printed materials include: a nineteenth century brochure from the historic Hotel St. Elmo in Green Cove Springs; a nineteenth century brochure from Murray Hall in Pablo Beach, with a letter of recommendation from General F. E. Spinner, ex-Treasurer of the United States; and a Florida Hotel Guide for the 1924-25 season.
