ABSTRACT
Mr. Hazouri has a long record serving
the Northeast Florida area. He was elected to the Florida House of
Representatives in 1974, where he served until 1986. In 1987, he
was the successful candidate for Mayor of Jacksonville and served
one term as Mayor until 1991. After unsuccessful mayoral candidacies
in 1991, 1995, and 2002, he was elected to the Duval County School
Board in November 2004, representing District 7. The Collection
contains correspondence and printed materials relating to his mayoral
campaigns and activities as Jacksonville Mayor. Newspaper clippings
form the majority of the collection.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
State legislator, businessman, and lobbyist. Tommy Hazouri
was born
in Jacksonville in1945, and was educated in local schools: Andrew Jackson
High School, 1962, Jacksonville University, Bachelor's of Arts in
History, 1966. He was elected
for six terms to the Florida House of Representatives--1974, 1976,
1978, 1980, 1982, and 1984--representing District 20. He also served
as Vice-Chairman of the Duval County Legislative Delegation, 1978-1980;
Chairman of the Delegation, 1980-82; Chair, Florida House Education
Committee, 1984-1986. He was elected Mayor of Jacksonville in 1987,
serving one term until 1991, and thereafter was an unsuccessful mayoral
candidate in 1991, 1995, and 2002. In 2004, he was elected to the Duval
County School Board, representing District 7, and currently is President
of Hazouri & Associates,
a private consulting firm.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists primarily of newspaper
and scrapbook files relating to Mr. Hazouri's political and legislative
activities. Few personal items are included. The core of the collection are materials relating to his
mayoral campaigns of 1986-87 and 1990-91, and his mayoral tenure of
1987-1991.
There is extensive documentation of this era in Jacksonville history
which provides detailed information and research depth unavailable
in any other single location. Major local issues covered during
this period include: Transportation (Elimination
of toll collection on Jacksonville bridges / expressways after voters
approved a half-cent sales tax, March 1988); Environment (Garbage
fee proposal, Odor / Tree ordinances, Billboard ban, Household recycling
efforts / Southeast Landfill); Crime (substantial increases
in police officers / fire fighters); Minority Relations (Affirmative
Action policies, Blodgett Homes demolition); and Urban Economic
Development.
The collection complements the Joe Carlucci Collection. Mr. Carlucci was a Jacksonville City Councilman
and Florida state legislator during the same period.
