ABSTRACT
Mr. Deane was a professional
photographer active in Jacksonville Beach, Florida for over forty-six
years. His work, as depicted in this collection, provides a
visual documentation of life at the Beaches and Northeast Florida
in the second half of the twentieth century. The collection consists
of 213 photographs and other miscellaneous materials. With only a few exceptions,
the photographs are undated, with the earliest known photograph in
the collection being 1944.

ARRANGEMENT
Mr. Deane's number system, unique numbers stamped on the back of each
photograph, was used to arrange the photographs into broad subject
categories. As an aid to the researcher, these numbers are included in
the collection's container list.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Professional photographer, instructor. Virgil R. Deane was born in
Mount Airy, North Carolina, in 1915. He opened his photography studio
in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, in 1943. Major photographic assignments
included a long tenure, 1947 - 1965, as staff photographer for
Fletcher High School in Jacksonville Beach, and extensive work for
national advertising agencies. His business clients included Winn-Dixie,
General Electric, Life / Fortune / Time and other journals, United Press,
Florida Times-Union / Jacksonville Journal, and Ponte Vedra Inn. Deane
was also a photography instructor at Florida Community College. He maintained
his studio unitil 1989, and died in Jacksonville Beach in
November 1999.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection consists of 213 photographs and
other miscellaneous materials, including Deane's photo order book
for January 1945. The photographs are primarily 8x10 black and
white prints, featuring daylight scenes. With only a few exceptions,
the photographs are undated, with the earliest known photograph in
the collection being 1944. Empirical evidence dates the majority of
the collection as mid-twentieth century, ca. 1945-1965.
The Jacksonville Beaches area
is the prime setting for most of the photographs. Scenes and
events depicted range from Beach parades, extensive Boardwalk activities
(ferris wheel, carousel, bingo, arcade games, etc.), interior
and exterior views of the Ponte Vedra Inn, African-American school
children and group dinner events, and several unique 1950s road
