HISTORICAL NOTE
The collection
contains materials relating to the activities of the following
organizations:
Civic Round
Table of Jacksonville, Florida. Founded on August 13, 1935,
the group, focusing on programs of civic betterment, serves as an
umbrella organization for Jacksonville's civic, charitable and social organizations.
It provides a forum for members to share ideas and
techniques, and to coordinate their activities through joint action.
Community Foundation in
Jacksonville. In May 1964, four Jacksonville leaders – J.J.
Daniel, Robert R. Feagin, Laurence Lee, Jr. and Thomas R. McGehee
– formally created The Greater Jacksonville Area Community Foundation,
the first community foundation
in the State of Florida. Renamed as the Community Foundation in
Jacksonville, it currently serves as steward of more than $100
million invested by the people of Jacksonville. In its first four
decades, it made grants in excess of $90 million to benefit individuals
and organizations.
Duval Audubon Society. Founded in 1939, the Society is a
nonprofit organization dedicated to the enjoyment of birds and other
wildlife with a primary focus on preserving a diversity of habitats
through education, conservation, environmental leadership, and community
involvement. The Duval Society is affiliated with the Florida Chapter
of the National Audubon Society.
Florida League
of Conservation Voters, Northeast
Florida Chapter. Founded in 1976,
the Florida League, an informal coalition of conservation activists
and leaders, serves as the nonpartisan advocacy and educational
arm of the environmental/conservation movement in Florida. The group
monitors the voting records and activities of Florida legislators
and issues an annual "scorecard" on their environmental
voting records.
Jacksonville
Community Council Inc. Founded
in 1975 as the Jacksonville Council on Citizen Involvement (1975-1978),
JCCI is a nonpartisan civic organization that engages diverse citizens
in open dialogue, research, consensus building and leadership development
to improve the quality of life and build a better community in Northeast
Florida. Its predecessor was the Community Planning Council.
Jacksonville
Environmental Protection Board. The
Board consists of nine members chosen to represent industry, conservationist
organizations, professional engineers, the medical profession, and
the general public. Its purpose is to develop regulations necessary
for the administration and enforcement of the City's environmental
laws.
Jacksonville Symphony Association Guild. Since the early 1950s,
the Guild of the Jacksonville Symphony Association has worked to fulfill
the goals of its founders "to further an awareness of music and to create
strong community support of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra through
fundraising projects."
Northeast
Florida Coastal Zone Management
Citizens Advisory Committee. From
1975, this Region IV Florida group was charged with evaluating
and developing regional policies to complement the state Coastal
Management Program.
Riverside Avondale Preservation. Founded
in 1974, this non-profit agency has been working to enhance and preserve the
architecture, history, cultural heritage and economic viability of the historic
Jacksonville neighborhoods of Riverside and Avondale.
San Marco Preservation Society. This Society was formed in 1975 as a non-profit
corporation to protect the integrity of the San Marco residential neighborhood and to enhance
the revitalization of the business district.
Volunteer
Jacksonville, Inc. Founded
in 1973, the organization provides support and assistance to individual
volunteers, and to mission-based organizations who serve the local
community.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Documents, primarily research and study materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings,
publications, surveys, newsletters, and minutes and agendas of meetings. The majority of
correspondence and documents relate to the membership and activities in these organizations
of Robert G. Grimes, a Jacksonville insurance executive and community activist. Mr. Grimes
was active in a number of community organizations from 1977 to
2000, and served in different capacities as an officer, board member,
and newsletter editor. Environmental
groups are well-represented, due to his interest in conservation issues.
Of particular interest
are printed materials and correspondence relating to the Mimi and Lee Adams Environmental Awards,
an annual Jacksonville environmental award named in memory of Mimi Adams, an environmental activist,
and her husband, Lee, a nature artist.
