Coggin College of Business

Naming of Coggin College of Business, October 7, 2002
Remarks by Luther W. Coggin

Just before dawn on October 2, 2002, Blanche and I walked out on the deck of the ship as we sailed into New York Harbor. The Statue of Liberty's torch appeared to shine brighter than ever with an American flag waving brilliantly in the early morning mist. This experience dramatically reminded us once again of the freedoms and opportunities we are privileged to enjoy as Americans.

Coincidentally, October 2nd marked the beginning of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the University of North Florida and the first day of Founders' Week. For 30 years, UNF has been, and is today, exemplary of the great contributions a new institution can make to its community and to higher education. The leadership has been remarkable, the accomplishments too numerous to list . . . truly amazing to have come so far so quickly. We commend all past and present leaders for their Commitment to Excellence.

For more than 30 years, the Coggin family has had a part in the free enterprise system in Jacksonville and this wonderful area. We are grateful for our many blessings including the friendship of Dean and Mrs. Earle Traynham. We are honored to be able to fund a professorship in the School of Business named after Dean Traynham, and to provide additional funds to enable the School of Business faculty to teach and its students to learn the pathways to the world of free enterprise.

As the sun rose over New York City that morning, we again felt the blessings of this great land -God Bless America!
