PERIODICALS SECTION

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The Periodicals Collection is located on the third floor of the Library.
  • As a rule, items in the collection do not circulate.
  • The print copies of journals, magazines and newspapers are available via open stacks during regular library hours .
  • Periodicals assistance hours differ from the library's regular hours.
  • Assistance is also available by telephone (620-2618) or email.

PERIODICALS ARRANGEMENT

The print collection in its entirety and much of the microform collection are arranged according to the Library of Congress Classification system. The print collection can be browsed by subject using Library of Congress Classification letters. To locate a specific periodical title use the UNF Library catalog to identify its call number.

Many of the resources in the periodicals section can be retrieved electronically using the library's databases. See the Electronic Resources Guide for more information.

Many databases abbreviate journal names. Here are abbreviations for medical journals.  Here is one for general journals.

NEWSPAPERS

The newspaper collection consists of daily papers from major United States metropolitan areas and the Times (London) for international news. Current newspapers are arranged alphabetically by title in the Newspaper Reading Area. Older issues may be available in microfilm.

The Library has the full text of hundreds of newspapers through electronic research databases.

See Newspapers in the UNF Library, for a list of the newspapers accessible at the library or view a handy timeline of our newspaper coverage.

MICROFORM MATERIALS

All periodicals available in microformat are kept behind the Periodicals Service Desk. Microform materials are divided into two separately housed collections: the microfilm collection (on film reels) and the microfiche collection (on card size film). The microfilm collection consists of backfiles of periodicals and newspapers, and some government documents. The microfiche collection consists of backfiles of periodicals and several large research collections.
