Unique items include first editions of biographical works on Wolfe, postcards and prints and numbered and limited editions published by the Thomas Wolfe Society.

  • November 12 -- Lecture by UNF history professor Carolyn Williams. Jacksonville: A Visual History held in the Special Collections Reading Room.
  • November 10 -- New exhibit: Technology & Campaigning. This exhibit highlights the ways in which presidential candidates have communicated their messages to the public.
  • November 6 and 7 -- Florida Chapter of Association of College and Research Libraries (FACRL) holds 2008 workshop at UNF. A reception and tours of the library were scheduled for November 6. The workshop was held at the University Center. Librarians from diverse libraries all over Florida attended the conference.
  • November 5 -- Exhibit reception honoring UNF trustee Willie Gonzalez. His collection of Colombian artifacts are on display through December 12 (see October 10.) The reception is at 3 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room.

October 2008

  • October 24 -- New guide with information about Google News Archives.
  • October 24 -- In conjunction with UNF’s upcoming Samuel Beckett Festival, a new exhibit has been installed in the Library's entrance display case. Students from Professor  Clark Lunberry’s Senior Seminar on Samuel Beckett, led by Alyson Casey, put together this display to promote the festival, which will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, with a lecture by the renowned Beckett scholar and director, Dr. Herbert Blau, followed by a concert of Morton Feldman’s “For Samuel Beckett” at 7:30 p.m.  Monday, Nov. 3, in the Robinson Theater and culminating in a performance of one of Beckett’s greatest plays “Krapp’s Last Tape” with the celebrated Beckett performer Rick Cluchey at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the Robinson Theater.  
  • October 22 -- The Thomas G. Carpenter Library and the LGBT Resource Center sponsor a discussion on “Banned Books: A Missing Link in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Identity Development” in the Special Collections Reading Room on the first floor of the Library. Leading the discussion is Richmond Wynn, interim program coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center, and Giovanni Haertel, a  University graduate and  current UNF graduate student.
  • October 10 -- In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Library is exhibiting a collection of Colombian artifacts on loan from UNF trustee Willie Gonzalez. The items on display consist of woodcarvings, clay and wood masks, fossils and minerals, a weaving stand, copper utensils, woven materials and Colombian currency. Gonzalez collected these items while living in Colombia from 1978 to 1980. The exhibit is in the Special Collections Reading Room on the ground floor and will be open through Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

September 2008

  • September 22 -- The Thomas G. Carpenter Library and the UNF Women’s Center sponsor a talk by Thelma Young on her new book “All You Could See Was The Water” in the Library’s Special Collections Reading Room. Young recounts the experiences of children after Hurricane Katrina.
  • September 15 -- A new Library exhibit features the ceramics and mixed media artwork of Nofa Dixon, assistant professor in the Department of Art and Design. The objects on display are made from clay and are hand constructed, undergoing numerous firings in the process. In addition to glazes, some painting, drawing and mixed media embellishments finish the surfaces. Dixon's work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is included in major corporate and private collections.

  • August 26 - 13 Gale Power Pack databases now available. Gale Publishers created subject subsets from the Academic OneFile database that the library has made available for several years. These smaller databases will help students find information on their topics more easily. Links are in the A to Z database list and in the specific subject area. Titles are:

  • August 14 - Redesigned library website goes live. The library's new website was designed by UNF's Marketing & Publications Department and produced by Lauren Dennis, a sophomore work study student who intends to go into the UNF nursing program. The website is color-coded so each type of page is easily identifiable.
  • August 12 - ERIC database now available through WilsonWeb.

July 2008

  • July 22 - New exhibit features the UNF Honors Program. The display, created by Honors student Elyse Marhefka, highlights the events and activities of the Program. It includes photographs of student leadership groups and Service Learning opportunities. Well-represented are images of study abroad trips to Japan, Peru and Ghana.
  • July 20 - New exhibit, Public Art in Jacksonville, provides an introduction to public art at UNF and in Jacksonville. The exhibit was created by UNF student Toni Farr while interning at the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. Public Art at UNF features several campus works approved by local art selection committees as part of Florida’s Art in State Buildings program.
  • July 7 - Text messaging of titles and call numbers is the newest enhancement to the library catalog.
  • July 7 -- Subscription to LexisNexis Statistical has been cancelled by the statewide library consortia. Budget cuts and low usage statistics influenced this decision.

June 2008

  • June 30 -- Blackwell Synergy merges with Wiley Interscience. All content from Blackwell will move to Wiley Interscience.
  • June 20 -- New in media - ten Apple iMac computers configured to run the latest software enabling students to edit audio, video and photos. Software installed includes: Microsoft Office 2008, Firefox 3, EyeTV, iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Photobooth. In addition, these computers may be used to watch VHS tapes replacing the old vcr/tv combos.
  • June 18 -- Single sign-on is now a reality. Students are able to sign in to myWings and link to library databases from off campus without having to log in to the library. One username and password work for everything.
  • June 16 -- Rhonda Lesperance will spend about six weeks at the UNF Library completing the practicum requirements for her degree in library science. Rhonda lives in Morocco and is earning her masters in library science online through Texas Women's University.
  • June 9 -- Salem Health now available. Online edition of the print source, Magill's Medical Guide, found in the 2nd floor Reference Collection. Description from Salem Health: "This authoritative reference source helps bridge the gap between medical encyclopedias for professionals and popular self-help guides. It is an up-to-date and easy-to-use compendium of medical information suitable for student research as well as use by general readers, including patients and caregivers. The Guide covers diseases, disorders, treatments, procedures, specialties, anatomy, biology, and issues in an A-Z format, with sidebars addressing recent developments in medicine and concise information boxes for all diseases and disorders."
  • June 3 -- New exhibit - “Government Documents on the Environment.” Created by Government Documents Librarian Courtenay McLeland, the display features Florida publications and nautical charts relating to the St. Johns River, water conservation, wetlands, recreational activities and manatee protection. The Library is a full depository for Florida public documents and a selective depository for federal documents, including maps and atlases, which are located in the Government Documents Department on the second floor.
  • June 2 -- LibTV is here! The library now has 47" LCD panels to display information, directions, and facts about the library. Information panels will be on the 1st floor in the lobby and on the 2nd floor near the elevators. LibTV on the 1st floor behind the curriculum collection and the 3rd floor in Periodicals will show closed-captioned news and media video like CNN or CNBC as well as information messages.

May 2008

  • May 21 -- New exhibit features a selection of photographs produced by students enrolled in a course focused upon recreating photographic processes from the 19th century. Students enrolled in Paul Karabinis' Photo Arts course merged digital negative-making techniques with the cyanotype and salted paper processes to create unique works on watercolor papers. The display also features brief technical explanations as well as examples of materials needed to recreate each process.
  • May 20 -- America: History & Life and Historical Abstracts no longer available through ABC-Clio. Only available through EBSCOhost.
  • May 19 -- 2008 Library Survey drawing winner is Laura Ache. She is the winner of a UNF Bookstore $100 gift card.
  • May 15 -- Laptop computers now available to check out for use in the library.

April 2008

  • April 24 -- Tests in Print now available. Produced by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska, Tests in Print (TIP) serves as a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language. TIP provides vital information to users including test purpose, test publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), and test author(s).
  • April 22 -- Clark Lunberry, assistant professor in the Department of English, will give a talk and slide presentation on his recent poetry installations at UNF at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in the Special Collections Room of the Library, Room 1301. Lunberry will discuss his recent "Murmur of Words/Murmur of Wounds" pond-poem and its accompanying stairwell sound installation, as well as his on-going exhibition of object-poems titled “No Stone Unturned: FACT,” which is currently on view in the Library’s display case.
  • April 21 -- The Thomas G. Carpenter Library will provide 24-hour access during finals week, supported in part by funding from the Student Government Association. The Library will be open continuously starting at 7 a.m. Friday, April 25, and will remain open until 11 p.m. Thursday, May 1. Most service desks will adhere to normal operating schedules. Access to the Library's computer areas, study areas, book and media collections as well as Checkout/Course Reserves services on the first floor will remain available throughout finals week.
  • April 15 -- UNF trustee Wilfredo Gonzalez speaks about his African Art collection in the Special Collections Room of the Library, Room 1301. Gonzalez discusses the background and cultural significance of the items on display in the current Library exhibit. He collected these artifacts during his assignment as Peace Corps director in Ghana, West Africa, from 1981 to 1984.
  • April 15 -- National Library Week designates today as Library Workers Day to recognize the work of employees in libraries across the country. At UNF’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library, the 46 full-time employees along with 32 part-time student assistants keep the Library open 134 hours per week. Last year more than 500,000 faculty, students and visitors entered the Library to study, use computers, locate books and journals, meet study groups and attend classes. Library employees managed an acquisitions budget of $1.6 million to acquire and catalog resources for the collections and delivered Library instruction to 5,600 students through 216 classes and tours. Library staff also answer reference questions, process interlibrary loan requests, check out books and media, book repair books and create exhibits.
  • April 3 -- New exhibit, “From Pen to Printing Press,” in recognition of National Library Week. Created by the Serials staff of the Library, it includes reproductions of medieval manuscripts, a scale model of a Franklin printing press and tools used for hand bookbinding, along with several examples of Victorian bindings. The exhibit is located in the Library’s first-floor entrance display case and will be available for viewing until May 1.

  • March 29 -- 2008 Library Survey of Students.
  • March 28 - Grove Music Online now available.
  • March 19 - New exhibit: Clark Lunberry, assistant professor in the Department of English, has a new exhibit of his object-poems in the first floor display case of the Library. The exhibit, titled “No Stone Unturned: FACT,” will be up through mid-May.
  • March 17 - Journals @ Ovid -- Full text of 36 nursing journals + searching capability of all Ovid journals with citations, full abstracts, and possible linking using Article Linker.
  • March 14 - Dictionary of Old English Corpus now available. This is a database consisting of at least one copy of every Old English text.
  • March 4 - New exhibit: "A Celebration of Women’s History Month,” created by the UNF Women’s Center highlights the March events and activities of the Center, and features historical materials relating to the center’s 20th anniversary. The exhibit is located in the Library’s first-floor entrance display case and will be available for viewing until April 2.
  • March 4 - New exhibit: “Women’s History Month (Jacksonville, Fla.) Posters, 1986-2007,” showcases the Library’s new collection of 21commemorative posters donated by the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women. Since 1986, the commission has published an annual poster honoring four local women for their outstanding contributions to the Jacksonville community.

February 2008

  • February 18 - UNF Library Sound and Poetry Installation: ‘Murmur of Words’. Clark Lunberry, assistant professor in the English Department, in close collaboration with many UNF students (including Kelley Predieri, Lauren Seckinger, Orin Heidelberg, Tea Rorstrom, and Florida International University’s Erik Deluca), designed and installed the various components. The sound-collage heard in the stairwell is composed of 25 randomly chosen readers who were recently recorded reading in the Library.
    A slide show/projection event will begin from this evening, filling the tall, brick wall at the back of the Library. This projection/wall event, with reader projection, will run each evening from 6:30 to 9 p.m. through Thursday, Feb. 28. The stairwell sound installation will run throughout the day, and the pond installation will stay in place as long as the elements allow.
  • February 18 - New exhibit features African art on loan from UNF trustee Willie Gonzalez. The exhibit can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until April 30 in the Special Collections Reading Room on the ground floor of the Library. The items on display consist of wood carvings, soap stone items, kente cloth and scarves, carved and painted masks, woven materials and brass pieces. Gonzalez collected these items while living in Ghana, West Africa.
  • February 13 - In recognition of Black History Month, the theme of a new exhibit is the Harlem Renaissance. The display features art and literature related posters, books and sculpture. A highlight of the exhibit is a small replica of a sculpture by Augusta Savage, “The Harp,” which she created for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
  • February 11 - New Library exhibit. Small Works," features student work from UNF's Painting / Drawing Research class. The exhibit, which is curated by Professor Louise Freshman Brown and located on the first floor, includes works by the following students: Matthew Patterson, Lauren Corbin, Damon Roby, Gustavo Roca, Jaymie Mills Hedman, Fran Siebe and Michelle Mohler.
  • February 8 - What's New! now available through RSS feed. What is RSS?
  • February 6 - Spotlight on UNF Authors -- Ronald T. Libby
  • February 4 - Philosopher's Index now available through CSA.

  • January 30 - Artist lecture by UNF Assistant Professor Stephen Heywood. Dr. Heywood discussed the evolution of his ceramic work, and talked about selected pieces from his current ceramics exhibition in the Library.
  • January 25 - Spotlight on UNF Authors -- Aaron Sheehan-Dean
  • January 24 - New Library exhibit: Features the United Way of Northeast Florida Life Act 2 picture books by Dr. Gigi Morales David, a UNF faculty member in the Department of Childhood Education, College of Education and Human Services. She is the author of the children's books "Peter and the Silent Siren" (2005), "The Little Red Envelopes" (2006) and "Just Mollie and Me" (2007). The Life Act 2 picture books are inspired by the life messages of senior citizens currently living in Jacksonville. The display, on the first floor of the Library, contains a mixture of media, including photographs, paintings and realia, which are objects used to relate classroom teaching to real life, especially of peoples studied.

A fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, drama and prose, 136 full-text literature journals, and other key criticism and reference resources. Includes the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (fourth edition), The American Heritage English to Spanish and Spanish to English Dictionaries, and Roget's Thesaurus II: The New Thesaurus (third edition).   • June 23 -- EBSCO Electronic Journals Service added to database lists. It provides links to the full text of print journals that the UNF Library subscribes to through EBSCO Publishers. Availability depends upon the publisher and its agreement with UNF. So... if it is found in the library catalog, it could be available through this database.
  • June 20 - 30 -- Proposed new library web page evaluated and critiqued by focus group. Two proposals were presented along with a list of questions and instructions .
  • June 6 -- Library begins Freshman Orientation presentations for almost 2,000 students.
  • June 5 -- 2003 Library Survey Report .

  • May 11 -- New newspapers through ProQuest Newspapers -- New York Times (1999 to date), Wall Street Journal (1984 to date), Washington Post (1987 to date), Los Angeles Times (1988 to date) and the Christian Science Monitor (1988 to date).
  • May 1 -- IAC databases on WebLUIS to be discontinued August 1, 2003. These include Academic Index, Business Index and LegalTrac. All database content for Academic Index is available through Expanded Academic ASAP (Gale). LegalTrac and Business Index are also available through Gale InfoTrac. Business Index content is found in General BusinessFile ASAP.
  • PsycINFO through WebLUIS will be discontinued January 1, 2004. The PsycINFO database will be available on a different platform.
