Dr. Carolyn Williams, UNF history professor, will be speaking on Eartha M. M. White at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Library's Special Collections Reading Room. This presentation is in conjunction with the current Library exhibit, Eartha M. M. White: a Jacksonville Legend. The Library is fortunate to hold the personal papers of Eartha White, a prominent African-American resident of Jacksonville, widely known for her humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors in Northeast Florida.
Williams wrote a chapter on White for the recently published book, “Varieties of Women's Experiences” (University Press of Florida, 2010). Copies of this book, as well as Williams’ book, “Historic Photos of Jacksonville” will be available for purchase and signing. Seating for the presentation is limited; plan to arrive early.
Exhibit: Eartha M. M. White: A Jacksonville Legend
Through March 15, 2010
Special Collections Reading Room
The Library's Special Collections section is fortunate to hold the personal papers of Miss White, a prominent humanitarian and philanthropist active in the twentieth century in Northeast Florida. The Collection contains over 1,000 items, including documents, correspondence, notes, photographs, and other memorabilia. Because Miss White was a contemporary and friend of many leading African Americans, the collection is particularly valuable for research on African American history in Northeast Florida. Objects on display range from rare photographs featuring Miss White and her activities to documents relating to the Clara White Mission, named after her mother and still operating in downtown Jacksonville. The display is in the Special Collections Reading Room on the ground floor until March 15, during the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. In conjunction with the exhibit, UNF history professor Dr. Carolyn Williams will present a lecture on Eartha M. M. White on February 25 at 2 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room. Here is the Special Collections Eartha M. M. White online information.
